Qualification and Experience

Minimum Qualification

Doctorate (PhD) in Reading or Literacy Education



  • Significant experience teaching at the tertiary level, inclusive of postgraduate courses
  • At least three years teaching experience at elementary or secondary school level


Special Expertise /Focus 

  • Ability to teach in a range of Teacher Education programmes (such as, B.Ed., Diploma in Education, and Master’s programmes)
  • Ability to work within inter-disciplinary, thematic curriculum teams
  • Ability to develop reading/literacy programmes to improve the teaching of reading/literacy at all levels of the education system, especially as these relate to diagnosis and remediation, comprehension strategy instruction, and content area literacy
  • Ability to set up and operate a reading clinic. Specifically, applicants must possess competence to provide a range of diagnostic services, such as assessing alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, word attack skills, oral reading fluency, listening and reading comprehension, and providing appropriate intervention to meet clients’ needs
  • Ability to provide clinical supervision of reading/literacy teachers in elementary and secondary schools
  • Ability to provide continuous professional development (Standard 6.3 of the Standards for Reading Professionals, ILA, 2010)
