UB seeks a dynamic, collaborative and forward-thinking leader who will provide vision and strategic direction for the FPAS and act as an advocate for the sciences through the University network and beyond.
The Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences comprises the academic units of Chemistry, Environmental & Life Sciences; Mathematics, Physics & Technology; and Nursing & Allied Health Professions. Boasting the largest number of majors, its faculty come from across the globe and are responsible for the delivery of programmes which produce the majority of the nation's health professionals, engineers, technologists, architects and scientists. Active recruitment over the past three years has focused on early career faculty as well as faculty with an established research agenda as UB builds its capacity to create and apply new knowledge to address challenges and seize opportunities that cut across five core areas: health and wellness; food security and production; sustainable development; energy and natural resources; and applied mathematics and computational and quantitative sciences.
The Dean will be responsible for working with faculty to expand the foundation and network established nationally, regionally and internationally. Aligned with the University's mission and embracing its newly chartered status, the Dean will lead efforts in leveraging one of world's richest oceans and coastal ecosystems and access to a unique network field stations, natural preserves and laboratories as well as ecologically and culturally rich field sites that stretch across the Bahamian archipelago to develop integrated and innovative undergraduate and graduate academic and research-infused programmes.
In driving this mandate, the Dean will lead the Faculty in advocating for as well as seeking avenues to ensure the success of the University's Capital Campaign to attract resources to expand the G.T.R. Campbell Small Island Sustainability Research Complex, the resurgence of the Bahamas Environmental Research Centre (BERC) and the Poultry Research Unit (PRU). The Dean will also seek to establish endowed professorships in related Small Island Sustainability niche areas.
In addition, in refining and mapping out the Faculty's strategic plan so that it dovetails with that of the University, the Dean will cultivate strategic partnerships with University administrators, faculty and staff, and with local community members and scientific organizations in order to execute the educational objectives of both the FPAS and UB. Alumni relations and fundraising are essential components of the position and the Dean will play an active leadership role in both. Building on its strengths, the Dean will provide strong, collaborative and transparent leadership for the FPAS.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitate the delivery of academic programmes, including the development of new programmes and the systematic review, assessment and evaluation of existing ones.
- Provide leadership and management of the Faculty Board and approve programmes, courses and general proposals for submission to Academic Senate and other Boards as necessary.
- Manage the academic, operational, physical, fiscal and human resources of the FPAS.
- Advance the quality of undergraduate and graduate instruction, supporting and sustaining faculty research activities and promoting the continued development of the FPAS.
- Spearhead the recruitment, hire, orientation and retention of appropriately qualified faculty.
- Drive the development of all UB science laboratories including but not limited to the G.T.R. Campbell Small Island Sustainability Research Complex, the resurgence of the Bahamas Environmental Research Centre (BERC) and the Poultry Research Unit (PRU).
- Collaborate with the Executive Director of the Gerace Research Institute, scholars and researchers in the Institute's mandate to undertake a wide range of environmental research projects in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.
- Ensure faculty assessment and evaluation in accordance with University policies and procedures and recommend annual increments upon satisfactory performance of duties and responsibilities.
- Monitor full-time and part-time faculty workloads, duties and responsibilities.
- Recruit and retain talented students; monitor student enrolment; facilitate the timely completion of degree requirements; monitor and advise students on academic probation and suspension.
- Facilitate the resolution of disagreements or conflicts between faculty and students and provide advice and support for disciplinary process/action when required.
- Contribute to academic policy review and development.
- Represent the FPAS, and by extension academic units in the Faculty, to students, parents, professional organizations, other colleges and universities, business and industry and other relevant constituencies.
- Maintain and expand links with government ministries, boards and agencies, with scientific groups and other relevant constituencies.
- Represent the University on national and international committees.
- Advance and support alumni relations and development initiatives.
- Prepare annual reports and other reports, plans and analyses as necessary.
- Serve on the Academic Affairs Leadership Team to assist with the overall strategic and operational planning, quality assurance, resource allocation, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the academic affairs of the University.

- Earned terminal degree from an accredited university in one of the pure or applied sciences;
- Higher education administrative and programme development experience;
- Professional experiences and credentials appropriate to the rank of Associate or Full Professor;
- History of leadership in academic administration that exhibits progressively increasing responsibility, a record of success in building academic programmes and support services, and demonstrated prudent management of financial resources;
- Highly developed and effective communication and interpersonal skills, as well as experience in building collaborations at multiple levels and with diverse constituencies.
Setting. The University of The Bahamas (UB) is a vital catalyst for national development. Chartered on 10th November 2016, UB had its genesis in The College of The Bahamas which was established in 1974. Since 1995, the institution's academic offerings have expanded through the introduction of baccalaureate degree programmes offered across a broad range of approximately 60 majors. Master's degree programmes have included an MBA and an MSc in Reading and Inclusive Education as well as graduate degree programmes offered in collaboration with various US universities. UB operates from the Oakes Field Campus and the Grosvenor Close Centre in New Providence; UB-North in Grand Bahama; and the Gerace Research Institute in San Salvador. Additional sites are planned for throughout the archipelago.
