The West Indies Central Sugar Cane Breeding Station (WICSCBS) Inc. is a nonprofit company that is regional in operation with the responsibility of breeding new sugar cane varieties to serve the needs of its members.
The Station has a long and distinguished history providing varieties and research output for the Caribbean region and beyond. We are seeking a suitable candidate to fill the position of Director/CEO. The successful candidate will lead a small team of scientists and technical staff.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop strategic plans and ensure its alignment with short-term and long-term objectives of the breeding programme and its members
  • Development of appropriate research programmes and continuous improvements needed to support the breeding effort
  • Maintain, expand, and build business relations with international sugar cane variety programmes for the benefit of WICSCBS members
  • Establish and manage annual budgets in order for WICSCBS to stay economically viable at the lowest cost to the members
  • Ensure continued compliance with company regulations in Barbados
  • Report a viable annual business plan to the WICSCBS Board of Directors that will include direction for improvement (if needed) with the aim of lowering membership cost while protecting the intellectual property of the sugarcane germplasm collection
  • Oversee the management of an extensive germplasm collection that is world class
  • Collaborate with the WICSCBS Technical Committee to review membership alignment and progress in order to plan and develop research to optimize variety development
  • Work closely with a small administrative support team to accomplish management goals, advance employee engagement and develop a high performing team
  • Leads and directs the work of employees and has responsibility for personnel actions including hiring, performance management, and termination
  • Maintain consistent open lines of communication with research and farm staff to promote a team atmosphere
  • Provide the highest quality professional and technical assistance to all WICSCBS members



The candidates must possess:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience, including some prior management experience, with extensive knowledge of plant breeding
  • Graduate degree preferred in genetics or plant breeding but can be substituted for extensive experience with an undergraduate degree in a plant science discipline
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Experience in developing research strategies and implementing vision
  • Solid working knowledge of the sugarcane industry is highly desirable
  • Must be able to function independently, demonstrate flexibility and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members, technical committee members, and Board of Directors
  • Ability to effectively problem solve and respond to inquiries and/or complaints from both team members and customers
  • Working knowledge of computers and software including Microsoft Office and other database software
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical reading materials
  • Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally including the ability to effectively present information to both the technical committee and Board of Directors
  • Proven record of scientific or management contributions to the success of a variety development program
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Team orientation
