The Executive Director will oversee all operations, functions, activities and will be responsible for giving the proper strategic direction and the implementation of the GNBS’s vision.

 

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), operating under the Ministry of Business is a semiautonomous governmental organization responsible for standards and quality in Guyana. GNBS was established in March 1985, under Act No. 11 of the year 1984. It has the legal status of a statutory corporation governed by a National Standards Council (NSC). The GNBS is a revenue generating agency and is also funded by the Government of Guyana. It is the only National Standards Body in Guyana and is an ISO 9001:2015 certified agency. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDES

  • Lead and implement strategies aiming to promote the GNBS’s mission and vision
  • Provide leadership in developing program, organizational and financial plans with the NSC and staff, and to effect plans and policies as authorized by the NSC.
  • Assure the maintenance of official records and documents, and ensure compliance with all national regulations.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field of standardization.
  • Assure that the NSC is kept fully informed on the condition of the GNBS and all important factors influencing it.
  • Promote and represent the programs and policies of the GNBS to all stakeholders
  • Be responsible for the recruitment, employment, professional development and release of all personnel.
  • Assure that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place
  • Assure that job descriptions are developed, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices are in place.
  •  Encourage staff development and education, and assist technical staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.
  • Maintain a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.
  • Be responsible for development and maintenance of sound financial practices and achieving financial sustainability or financial independence in the future.
  • Work with the staff, Finance Committee, and the board in preparing a budget; see that the GNBS operates within budget guidelines.
  • Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work.
  • Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the GNBS.
  • Possess keen interest in business and work closely with emerging sectors such as the Oil and Gas industry.

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION INCLUDES 

  • Advanced degree, a Master’s Degree in Science or Engineering; with a preference for a Master’s in Business Administration/Finance; along with a track record of effectively leading and regionally and/or nationally scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization and staff; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop highperformance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
  • Impeccable organizational skills and leadership abilities.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication abilities and public speaking skills.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

The incumbent would be required to work outside of normal working hours. He/she should be able to operate against challenges in reaching deadlines and maintain a positive relationship with all stakeholders, especially businesses.
