The incumbent facilitates medical education in public health, epidemiology, and biostatistics by delivering lectures, designing assessments, and supervising student research while contributing to curriculum accreditation and scholarly activities.

 

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate must possess at minimum, from a recognised university: 

  • PhD or equivalent Doctoral Degree, which should be in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or a closely related discipline 

OR 

  • An MBBS/MD or equivalent medical qualification, with postgraduate training in Public Health or Epidemiology e.g MB.BS/MD and MPH; MB.BS/MD DrPH. 

 

Candidates should also possess:

  • Evidence of prior participation in academic conferences, workshops, or symposia
  • Epidemiology (study designs, disease transmission, public health applications)
  • Research methods (quantitative and qualitative approaches, proposal development, critical appraisal) 

 

Candidates with the following would have an advantage:

  • Demonstrated teaching excellence in Medical or Health Sciences Education
  • Experience in curriculum design, integration, and assessment (e.g., OSCE, MCQ, case-based learning)
  • Experience supervising undergraduate or postgraduate students
  • Experience with Applied Biostatistics Software (e.g., SPSS, R, Stata)
  • Strong foundation in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Public Health Principles
  • Biostatistics (e.g. Descriptive and Inferential Statistics, Sampling Methods, Statistical Software)

 

The following would be considered assets:

  • Certificate in university teaching and learning
  • Certificate in medical ethics or communication skills for doctors
  • Fellowship or membership in a recognized professional body (e.g., American Public Health Association, International Biometric Society)
  • At least three (3) years’ teaching experience in Medical or Health Sciences Education
  • Evidence of scholarly output in peer-reviewed journals relevant to Public Health, Epidemiology, or Biostatistics 
  • Evidence of published research in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, or related field
  • Experience with simulation-based education or OSCE station design
  • Prior involvement in international collaborations or cross-border medical education initiatives
  • Public Health Systems, Social Medicine, and Community Health Priorities
  • Integration of laboratory medicine and pharmacology concepts into public health teaching

Candidates should be registered or be eligible to be registered with the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago.  

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivering lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions with students in Public Health, Social Medicine, Epidemiology, and Biostatistics
  • Designing and implementing assessments aligned with course learning outcomes (eg OSCE, written exams, practical tests)
  • Supervising student projects and providing academic advising
  • Contributing to curriculum development and accreditation processes (CAAM-HP standards)
  • Engaging in scholarly activity, including research and publication
  • Collaborating with colleagues across disciplines to ensure integrated teaching
  • Promoting professional values, ethics, and communication skills in medical education
