The incumbent facilitates medical education by delivering lectures and laboratory sessions in cardiovascular and respiratory sciences, and supervising student research while contributing to curriculum development and scholarly activities.

 

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate must possess at minimum, from a recognised university: 

  • A PhD or equivalent Doctoral Degree, which should be in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, or a closely related discipline 

OR 

  • An MBBS/MD or equivalent medical qualification, with postgraduate training in Basic Sciences 

Candidates should also possess: 

  • Experience supervising undergraduate or postgraduate students
  • Evidence of prior participation in academic conferences, workshops, or symposia
  • Application of evidence-based teaching methods and assessment strategies 
  • Candidate with experience in curriculum design, integration, and assessment (e.g., OSCE, MCQ, problem-based learning) would have an advantage.

 

The following would be considered assets:

  • Certificate in university teaching and learning
  • Certificate in medical ethics or communication skills for doctors
  • Fellowship or membership in a recognized professional body (e.g., American Physiological Society, European Respiratory Society, American Heart Association)
  • Evidence of teaching excellence in Medical or Health Sciences Education
  • At least three (3) years’ teaching experience in Medical or Health Sciences Education
  • Strong record of scholarly output in peer-reviewed journals relevant to Cardiovascular or Respiratory Sciences
  • Evidence of published research in Cardiovascular or Respiratory Sciences (Basic or Applied)
  • Experience in integration of pharmacological principles relevant cardiovascular and respiratory systems
  • Experience with simulation-based education or OSCE station design
  • Prior involvement in international collaborations or cross-border medical education initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate cardiovascular and respiratory sciences across Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pharmacology 
  • Cardiovascular Physiology, Anatomy, and Biochemistry (including Lipid Metabolism, ECG Interpretation, and Pathophysiology of Cardiovascular Disease)
  • Respiratory Physiology and Anatomy (including pulmonary function testing, mechanics of breathing, and gas exchange 
  • Candidates should be registered or be eligible to be registered with the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago.  

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivering lecturers, tutorials and laboratory sessions with students in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Basic Sciences
  • Designing and implementing assessments aligned with course learning outcomes (e.g., OSCE, written exams, practical tests)
  • Supervising student projects and providing academic advising
  • Contributing to curriculum development and accreditation processes (CAAM-HP standards)
  • Engaging in scholarly activity, including research and publication
  • Collaborating with colleagues across disciplines to ensure integrated teaching
  • Promoting professional values, ethics, and communication skills in medical education
