The complex and delicate balance of the natural world combined with contaminants and intervention by development strategies require scientifically sound and dynamic solutions to better understand the potential impact of human intervention on the marine realm.
The successful candidate will be able to respond to the increasing need of data handling, interpretation and evaluation of pre-processed information, such as in EIA, SEA, etc. and to provide support with existing information to the Authority's mandates on Environmental Management Plan (EMP), implementations and review. The candidate will face challenges in the implementation and constant gap analyses of data from human activities in the Area.
Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
Responsible for managing and advising on a wide range of projects including marine policy and planning studies, and environmental impact assessments;
Undertake studies and research in the fields of marine and/or environmental sciences;
Data handling and interpretation to provide recommendations to marine environmental challenges coming from activities in the Area;
Data handling and interpretation to propose recommendations and policies for the sustainable use of the marine environment under potential deep sea mining activities in the Area;
Perform sound scientific evaluations of historical data with new acquisitions to provide guidance in the sustainable exploration/exploitation of marine mineral resources;
Actively participate in the ISA’s work including the Annual Report Environmental Review Process.
Propose recommendations and policies for the sustainable use of the marine environment under potential deep sea mining activities in the Area;
Liaise closely with communication experts to advocate, educate and disseminate acquired data and information to the general public;
Publish data in a user-friendly format following ISA's communication guidelines and write high quality reports on marine environmental information;
Performs other duties as assigned.

Advanced university degree (Doctorate or equivalent) in Environmental Sciences/environmental engineering, marine biology or oceanography.
A lower-level university degree in combination with additional years of relevant experience in Environmental Sciences/environmental engineering, marine biology or oceanography or other related field, may be accepted in lieu of the Doctorate.
A minimum of five (5) years' experience with oceanographic data collection, interpretation and statistical analyses (knowledge of numeric and explicit statistics/models) is required.
Experience in a research or regulatory background together with a demonstrable track record in marine policy and planning is required.
Familiarity with physical, chemical, geological and biological data describing the deep sea in the Area is highly desirable.
Experience with Area Based Management Tools (ABMT) is an asset.
The candidate must be familiar with the nature of physical, chemical, geological and biological data pertaining to the deep sea in the Area.
Proven experience of working at deep sea environment is an asset.
English and French are the working languages of the International Seabed Authority. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
