The MLT III detects diseases by conducting tests, identifying microorganisms, analyzing fluids, supervising staff, maintaining quality, and relaying results to physicians.

 

Job Purpose:

The Medical Laboratory Technician III plays a crucial role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease by performing routine tests used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. He/she would identify bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms; analyze the chemical content of fluids; match blood for transfusions, test for drug levels, prepare specimens for examination, count cells and look for abnormal cells. The incumbent would be required to supervise and train laboratory personnel, as well as provide technical support as required. The MLT III oversees many activities in the various specialized sectors of Medical Laboratory Technology and assists with continuous quality improvement, including quality assurance and control and equipment maintenance.

Work is performed using automated equipment and instruments capable of performing a number of tests simultaneously, as well as using microscopes, cell counters and other sophisticated laboratory equipment. Results are then analysed and relayed to physicians.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine medical laboratory testing procedures using a variety of laboratory instrumentation
  • Performs quality control checks of instrumentation against established standards.
  • Performs clinical laboratory testing vital to the detection, differential diagnosis, treatment and study of diseases
  • Ensures that all specimens meet the relevant test requirements i.e.; volume, specimen type, correct collection tubes and integrity prior to testing
  • Examines and analyzes body fluids, tissues, and cells
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationship with patients, medical staff and the public
  • Reports accurately and in a timely manner all results of patient tests and examinations to the appropriate authority.
  • Ensures that reagent and supplies are available for daily use on bench
  • Orders and manages reagents/supplies
  • Performs sample sorting and accessioning
  • Documents work processes as required.
  • Troubleshoots as directed by manual.
  • Sign off and validate QC/patient reports.
  • Validates new procedures.
  • Supervises and trains junior staff.
  • Attends required meetings and participate in committees as requested.
  • Keeps abreast of laboratory techniques and research and shares new knowledge with co-workers.
  • Adheres to proper statistical quality control procedures for tests performed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current trends in medical laboratory technology
  • Ability to perform in all areas of the laboratory including, but not limited to, microbiology, haematology, chemistry, immunology and coagulation.
  • Ability to think creatively and demonstrate flexibility.
  • Ability to prioritize and achieve tasks within tight deadlines and responding to changing demands.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to obtain blood specimens by venipuncture.
  • Ability to operate a variety of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, management and peers.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work overtime, public holidays and weekends as requested.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited educational institution.
  • Current Registration with the Council of Profession Related to Medicine: Medical Laboratory Technicians Board of Trinidad and Tobago (MLTBTT).
  • Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in a hospital environment is required.
  • Any other relevant combination of qualifications and experience may be considered.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Willing to work overtime, public holidays and weekends as requested:
  • The incumbent is required to perform Emergency On-call duties based on an On-call roster as directed by the Essential Service Industry Standards for a 24-hour Health Care System.
  • The incumbent is also required to work in a shift environment covering 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of patients’ information at all times.
