This position will provide key support to BNT’s environmental policy initiatives.
 

Job overview:  The successful candidate will be required to review complex policy documents; efficiently produce policy briefs, documents and initiatives; must be highly skilled at producing strategic documents supported by research and careful analysis of relevant issues.

The position will be responsible for the development of general national park policies; leading BNT’s contribution to relevant national-level environmental policy; providing support for advancing international commitments; and leading policy initiatives to support implementation of the strategic plan of the BNT.

 

Qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Planning or Policy related field (Advanced degree a plus)
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrable computing skills;
  • Excellent research and critical thinking capabilities
  • A good knowledge of Bahamian legislation, Bahamian bi-lateral and multi-lateral agreements and international environmental law and policy;
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, passion for the environment, ability to multi-task, capability of working independently and as part of a team;
  • Capable of working flexible hours including weekends, ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally;
  • Prepared to deliver on strict deadlines;
  • Capable of reading large volumes of documents quickly and able to compile multiple complex information into a single briefing document, tailored to multiple audiences; and
  • A good knowledge of Bahamian and regional wildlife.
 

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Development of general national park policies to support effective management;
  • Leading BNT’s contribution to relevant national-level environmental policy;
  • Providing support for advancing international commitments;
  • Leading policy initiatives to support implementation BNT’s strategic plan;
  • Research and develop a policies to support effective national parks management;
  • Liaise with relevant government agencies and other key partners on legislative, planning or policy initiatives that align with BNT’s organizational goals and programmes;
  • Provide support for the execution of projects managed by the BNT;
  • Represent the BNT at national and international meetings regarding policy and other conservation matters;
  • Prepare and review scientific and technical reports, BNT policy documents, grant proposals and other materials as needed;
  • Attend and present BNT policy positions at national and international forums;
  • Support strategic planning for the Department of Science and Policy;
  • Manage projects pertaining to policy advancement for The Bahamas. This can involve fundraising, project planning, facilitating meetings, developing briefings, reporting consultation responses, and reporting to the supervisor, project partners and sponsors;
  • Execute aspects of other projects managed by the organisation;
  • Liaise with BNT colleagues, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Government Agencies, stakeholders, and international partners as needed;
  • Represent the BNT at national and international meetings regarding policy and other conservation matters;
  • Attend and present work at national and international conferences;
  • Write and review reports, scientific papers, technical reports, articles, educational materials, policy documents, grant proposals, applications and other materials as needed;
  • Assist other departments as needed;
  • Participate in the strategic planning for the Department of Science and Policy and any other duties assigned by the Director of Science and Policy.
