Job Description


The Project and Communications Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the implementation of all project activities, logistical requirements and liaise with stakeholders and targeted populations related to the project – Reducing Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence against Women in the context of HIV and AIDS. S/he is also responsible for organising, coordinating and executing all communications functions of the organisation across all JASL programmes.



Project Coordination

  • Oversee the mobilisation and linking of key populations of women to VAW-focused sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and psychosocial support services
  • Work with JASL’s Policy and Advocacy Officer to develop list of referral attorneys and refer key populations of women to legal advice services
  • Work with the Administrator to recruit and oversee Peer Links reaching and linking women who have experienced violence to JASL services
  • Screen women mobilised by the Peer Links for participation in entrepreneurship training
  • Explore avenues for courses in entrepreneurship for key groups of women affected by violence and coordinate training for them
  • Work with a consultant Business Development Officer to oversee the mentoring and monitoring of the execution of start-up businesses by key groups of women affected by violence
  • Seek technical assistance from experienced training specialists to develop a training curriculum that caters to the complexities in men’s anti-violence strategies
  • Compile list of suitable diverse facilitators from across grassroots, civil society, government (including law enforcement) and the private sector to expand the capacity of male advocates to promote women’s rights
  •  Coordinate capacity-building training with male leaders in issues around violence against women
  • Work with various male advocates to develop key anti-VAW messages
  • Leverage JASL’s relationship with police administrators to carry out a series of training exercises with in-service police officers working across the country
  • Work with JASL’s Programme Development Manager to strengthen introductory curriculum used in previous police training sessions to engender a human rights-based approach to policing
  • Work with JASL’s Monitoring and Evaluation Manager to prepare evaluation tools to measure immediate changes in knowledge and attitudes of the police relating to deal with key groups of women affected by violence
  • Mobilise women from key groups to carry out sensitisation with key duty bearers as well as with the police as part of training sessions
  • Host meetings with police station heads to present issues and seek long term solutions
  • Coordinate stakeholder meetings with key duty-bearers in government responsible for developing policy and legislation
  • Work with the JASL’s Policy and Advocacy Officer to develop position papers and briefs for meetings with key duty-bearers
  • Organise public fora to bring together key duty-bearers, women affected by violence, and the general public


Communications Coordination

  • Develop and implement annual communications, advocacy and visibility plans for the organisation within a framework of communication goals, objectives and target audiences, via key dissemination channels to convey key messages, JASL’s positions and achievements
  • Conduct market research to inform the development of communication, advocacy and visibility plans  and supporting tools
  • Develop mechanisms to evaluate the impact of communication, advocacy and visibility plans and supporting tools
  • Develop and implement targeted communications strategies for periodic campaigns geared towards disseminating  specific messages to key groups
  • Work with JASL’s M&E Officer to maintain JASL’s presence in social media and keep HIV-related issues current in the public sphere
  • Work with JASL’s M&E Officer to monitor monthly metrics of social media performance on all platforms and generate report
  • Update JASL’s website and social media pages regularly with clear and accessible materials to ensure communications are amplified and optimized within the community
  • Work with Database Manager to implement technical and content upgrades of JASL’s website
  • Work with JASL’s Policy and Advocacy Officer and through the Chapters to research, produce and disseminate newsletters and articles on a bi-monthly basis and put forward recommendation for improvements
  • Lead the development and management of JASL brand positioning and guidelines
  • Build and manage effective relationships with key media partners to leverage improved brand awareness
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local and international businesses and industries to support JASL’s brand awareness, advocacy efforts, resource mobilisation and programme delivery
  • Improve the visibility of JASL , its programmes and its advocacy efforts to include the creation of photo opportunities or speaking opportunities for JASL Board
  • Lead the coordination of major events such as press tours, conferences, exhibitions, open days as well as JASL signature activities including World AIDS Day, Project Smiles and Safer Sex Week
  • Devise and coordinate key imagery (photography and videography) from major events for use in communication materials including press releases, press kits and social media
  • Prepare speeches/statements to the public/media by JASL representatives
  • Work with JASL’s senior managers to develop annual reports for the organisation
  • Prepare well-written  and timely press releases and op-eds on a needs basis to mark key observances and occurrences
  • Organise launches for projects and other events
  • Organise press conferences/briefings
  • Prepare press kits for public relations events of JASL
  • Liaise with external media practitioners including advertising agencies, graphic designers, videographers, video editors and printers, to ensure that materials are produced on time and to a high quality
  • Manage ongoing communications activities such as responding to inquiries, maintaining calendar of events and communications and media mailing lists
  • Manage JASL internal communication (across chapters and departments)
  • Work effectively with other teams and departments to ensure capacity building around media and public relations



  • Master’s Degree in Media & Communications, Communication for Social and Behaviour Change, Project Management, Gender and Development Studies or other related degree
  • At least three (3) years’ experience working in Communications and Project Management
  • Experience in developing training curricula and implementing training
  • Good understanding of public health issues especially HIV/AIDS programme
  • Good understanding of issues related to gender-based violence
  • Experience working with key affected populations
  • Knowledge and experience working with civil society organisations
  • Owner of a reliable motor vehicle
