Job Description

The Quality Enhancement Officer (QEO) will serve the cross-campus Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) of the University of the West Indies. The role of the QEO is to support the University Dean, FMS, and the Director of Medical Education in ensuring that high standards with respect to teaching and learning processes are maintained, recognised and rewarded, and that problems are identified and addressed proactively.

Responsibilities and reporting relationship The QEO is responsible for the overview of academic standards and quality assurance and enhancement processes within the UWI FMS, and for the development of policy and practice in relation to such processes. The Officer would communicate with the Deans, FMS on all campuses on quality assurance issues and collaborate with the various cross campus committees of the FMS while working closely with the University Quality Assurance Unit and the Board for Undergraduate Studies.


Responsibilities include the following:

  • Internal monitoring of Faculty courses and teachers through: 
    • Developing and disseminating of teaching standards/ guidelines 
    • Conducting Quality Evaluation Visits to Campus and affiliated teaching sites 
    • Liaising with student representatives and other relevant stakeholders across the region 
    • Developing and overseeing a recognition scheme for top teachers and demonstrated excellence in medical education at UWI 
    • Collaborating with the UWI Quality Assurance Unit in the implementing of internal quality assurance processes 
  • Ensuring that policies and procedures are established and maintained to allow the Faculty to respond in a systematic manner to external requirements of accreditation authorities such as the CAAM-HP and the ACGME 
  • Planning of activities involved in preparation for and follow up of internal quality evaluations and reviews, and external accreditation reviews and visits including annual reports. 
  • Developing and implementing a Faculty Quality Strategy Handbook 
  • Promoting the development of initiatives related to quality enhancement, especially the enhancement of academic standards within the Faculty 
  • Promoting discussion and sharing of good practice between units and departments of the Medical Faculty in relation to quality assurance and enhancement.
  • Considering and addressing issues raised by student feedback. 
  • Advising the University Medical Dean, Faculty Boards and Curriculum Committee of the activities of relevant regional and international higher education agencies that are concerned with the assurance of quality and standards insofar as they relate to the FMS. 

Applicants for the post should possess good interpersonal and communication skills and have a Master’s degree in education, administration or related field with experience in quality assurance work in higher education.
