Job Summary

The Golden Age Home, a facility for the destitute, with over Four Hundred and Sixty (460) Residents, is inviting applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the position of Senior Social Worker (GMG/SEG1) on a contractual basis.

Job Description

Reporting to the General Manager, the incumbent is responsible to plan, organize and implement various programs that seek to aid in providing Residents with effective clinical, gerontological, psychological, psychosocial and mental health support to enhance the quality of the Residents lives while living at the Golden Age Home.  He /she shall also develop an effective program of rehabilitation and aim to reintegrate residents into the wider community.


Key Responsibilities:

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the Annual Work Plan and Budget for the Unit/Section;
  • Reviews plan periodically and make adjustments as approved, to achieve stated objectives;
  • Develop and implements programmes to ensure a holistic approach to Resident care;
  • Prepares and submits reports and other documentation on a quarterly and monthly basis as required;
  • Provides guidance to direct reports and other relevant personnel on matters relating to the welfare of the Residents;


Technical/Professional Responsibilities

  • Effectively monitor and assist supervisees in providing effective clinical, gerontological, psychological, mental health counseling to Residents with these challenges;
  • Monitor all cases to be investigated and assist in conducting investigations into reports of alleged abuse and or incidents involving Residents;
  • Develop a Resident Orientation Program for new admissions into the Home and assist in its effective and continuous execution;
  • Establish partnerships with National and International Agencies;
  • Provides crisis intervention social work as the need arises and monitor the effectiveness of similar interventions executed by the social services unit;
  • Conducts follow-up investigations whenever necessary and ensure that case histories are prepared as a part of Residents records;
  • Contribute  to the mobilization of resources for the funding and implementation of programmes and activities;
  • Establish and oversee the maintenance of a data base on all residents;
  • Provide the General Manager with written updates regarding important investigations conducted and findings and actions taken by the Social Services Unit;
  • Develop, implement and monitor procedures for the effective implementation of a programme of rehabilitation for Residents into their communities for those Residents who fall into that category;
  • Ensure that counseling is provided to Residents and their family members / next of kin cases where Residents are to be reintegrated into normal family life;
  • Network with other Senior Citizen Groups to exchange ideas and best practices;
  • Identify those Residents who are in receipt of pension funds, exgratia payment, and re-channel required funding towards their upkeep in the Home;
  • Acts as liaison between residents, their relatives and communities;
  • Effectively monitor and continuously improve upon the implementation of a vibrant structured self-sufficiency program within the organization that will generate positive publicity for the organization and motivate the interest of external participants;
  • Effectively monitor and implement all recreational, occupational and therapeutic activities to enhance the physical, social and psychological well-being of the Residents;
  • Keeps abreast of changing trends in programmes for the elderly;
  •  Implement decisions taken by the General Manager;
  • Participate in workshops, meetings and conference and serve on committees;
  • Oversee the marketing of items produced by Residents as a part of their occupational therapy activities;
  • Consult with Universities, Colleges and other Training Institutions to facilitate practicum students to provide social services to the Residents;
  • Supervise Social Work Students on practicum, placements from the University of the West Indies or any other students on such placements;
  • Assist in conducting searches for Residents who have gone missing;
  • Submit reports to the Chair of the Discharge Committee based on applications received for convening of said Committee and sit as member of Committee in examining the cases of Residents to be discharged;

  • Thorough knowledge of the characteristics and social aspects of mental and emotional disturbances and developmental disability;
  • Thorough knowledge of the various areas of social work, including group work, community organization, consultation, education and research;
  • Thorough knowledge of training and supervisory techniques;
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of social work administration
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of management, including program planning, staffing and budgeting;
  • Excellent planning, organizing, decision making, supervisory and analytical skills;
  • Excellent understanding of Jamaica’s social and economical problems;
  • Excellent knowledge of the existence of the population in the different communities;
  • Good knowledge of the Poor Relief Act, Rules and Regulations
  • Good Research Skills;
  • Proficiency in the relevant computer applications;
  • An excellent knowledge of working with the elderly and or vulnerable groups;


Special Conditions Associated With Job

  • Frequent travel to locations within Kingston and St. Andrew to facilitate rehabilitation, social therapy, counseling, pension arrangements among other matters pertinent to the welfare of the Residents;
  • Physical Demands – The incumbent might on occasion be required to restrain residents in confrontational situations;
  • Environmental Demands – The incumbent might spend a considerable amount of time in uncontrollable situations, that can be emotional and threatening;
  • Mental Demands – The unpredictability of the work cause mental and emotional stress, associated with life altering decisions that must be made;
  • Required to occasionally work on weekends;


Minimum Qualifications and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Worker or other related field
  • Six (6) years’ experience as a practicing Social Worker, three (3) of which should include supervisory experience in the field of Social Services
  • Two (2) years’ experience working with the Elderly and or vulnerable groups
