Job Description


Applies statistical theory and methods to collect, collate, analyse, interpret, summarize and produce data in support of policy research, policy development, implementation and evaluation, to enhance the Ministry’s Corporate and Operational Planning process resulting in local and international obligations being achieved


The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


  • Analyzes and interprets statistical data to identify significant differences in relationships among sources of information
  • Prepares data for processing by organizing information, checking for any inaccuracies, and adjusting and weighting raw data
  • Evaluates the statistical methods and procedures used in obtaining data to ensure validity, applicability, efficiency, and accuracy
  • Evaluates sources of information to determine reliability and accuracy of data
  • Plans data collection methods for specific projects and determines the types and size of sample groups to be used
  • Maintains databases to support that relevant data to the Ministry’s research and policy priorities.
  • Implements recommendations for improvements to data management within the Ministry, its Departments and Agencies
  • Supports Manager of Statistics in the delivery of seminars on statistical analysis and techniques to staff members from the Ministry, its Departments and Agencies
  • Makes recommendations to the Manager: Statistics, and implements agreed approaches to data collection and collations
  • Collects, collates and analyses relevant data on crime, offenders, victims and other areas of relevance to the Ministry’s research and policy priorities.
  • Collects, collates and analyses up to date demographic and other social data of relevance to research and policy analysis
  • Collects, collates and analyses information and data relevant to the Ministry’s International obligations (e.g. EU, UN)
  • Collects, collates and analyses data on national development and social development issues of relevance to research and policy from information provided by stakeholders such as STATIN, PIOJ, Universities and other Government Departments (e.g. census information, Social and Economic Survey of Jamaica etc.)
  • Maintains up to date comparative statistical data from overseas on issues of relevance to the Ministry’s research and policy priorities
  • Develops statistical reports and analysis as required on issues of relevance to the Ministry’s research and policy priorities
  • Presents statistical information and studies to Policy Managers and other key stakeholders
  • Prepares reports of statistical analyses, including information in the form of graphs, charts, and tables
  • Prepares reports and or bulletins for statistical publications
  • Participates in the Unit’s annual budgeting process



  • Good Report Writing Skills
  • Resourcefulness and ability to work independently
  • Ability to prioritize and manage busy workload
  • Knowledge of theory, systems and application statistical research methodology
  • Knowledge of statistical software applications
  • Ability to compile, correlate and analyze data and arrive at sound conclusions
  • Ability to represent findings and conclusions effectively in appropriate tabular, graphical and written formats
  • Attention to details



  • First degree in Social Sciences, Statistics or Mathematics
  • Three (3) years experience in social or economic research
  • Two (2) years experience using statistical tools and methods



  • Computer Science
  • Research Methods (Qualitative and Quantitative)
  • Statistical Package for the Social Sciences



  • Typical working environment no adverse working conditions
  • May be required to work for extended hours
  • Field research and data collection


Salary Scale: $907,317.00 – 1,078,514.00 Per Annum
