The Systems/Network Administrator’s role is to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the in-house information systems that support core organizational functions.
Additionally, the incumbent will install, configure and support the local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) systems.

This will be achieved by monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all networked software and associated operating systems. The incumbent will also ensure network availability to all system users and perform maintenance and resolve issues to support network availability and maximize the benefit of IT systems.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS

Technical/Professional Responsibilities

  • Develops network systems guides/manuals;
  • Develops and implements system installation procedures and support methods;
  • Develops and implements scheduled maintenance plan for LAN/WAN technologies;
  • Conducts the analysis, acquisition and installation of all hardware and software;
  • Implements and maintains security measurement criteria to monitor compliance to policies and standards;
  • Maintains password security, data integrity and file systems security for desktop and network environments;
  • Implements and maintains software or hardware solutions to protect the technological infrastructure from internal and external unauthorized entry or use and malicious content;
  • Conducts the appropriate data backups including disaster recovery operations as needed;
  • Tests and installs application patches, upgrades, service packs in development environment;
  • Installs, deploys and upgrades servers to support existing infrastructure;
  • Devises and documents a general system design based on the end user’s anticipated requirements;
  • Participates in the planning and architecture of technology solutions;
  • Participates in the business planning and budgeting for information technology and recommends system direction, additions and changes to meet future business requirements;
  • Supports and collaborates with the IT Infrastructure Services Manager in the development of the Agency’s IT Security/Disaster Recovery Plan, policies and procedures as it relates to the network;
  • Monitors site servers and firewall;
  • Works with other team members on integration issues, hardware, OS, infrastructure and software upgrades;
  • Troubleshoots connectivity, compatibility and performance problems;
  • Provides support to IT network issues;
  • Identifies options for potential solutions and assesses them for both technical and business suitability;
  • Designs and provides general maintenance of Agency’s Intranet/Extranet;
  • Reviews and constantly improves IT systems;

 

COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge of Cisco command line configurations and troubleshooting;
  • Knowledge of relational database management systems;
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in Web technologies (Internet, Intranet & Extranet);
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a wide range of software applications;
  • Demonstrated knowledge with working in a LAN and WAN environment;
  • Expert knowledge of operating systems;
  • Sound Networking and IT Security skills;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritise amongst conflicting demands;
  • Ability to manage limited resources;
  • Sound personal and professional integrity;

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • First Degree in Computer Science or Management Information Systems;
  • Microsoft Certification training (preferably MCSE) or Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA) would be an asset;
  • Three (3) years’ related experience;

OR

  • A Diploma in Computer Science, or Management Information Systems;
  • Microsoft Certification training (preferably MCSE) or Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA) would be an asset;
  • Five (5) years’ hands-on experience in systems and network administration, server applications in a Microsoft networked environment

OR

Any other equivalent combination of qualification and experience.
