Introduction to Clinical Medicine - Professor, Assistant or Associate

Overview

The candidate must be board-certified in internal medicine or family medicine, graduate from a recognized medical school, and must have at least five years of teaching experience in clinical skills to medical students.

The teaching experience should encompass didactic lectures and the construction of clinical vignettes which include small group discussions, incorporating a variety of preclinical experiences including the use of professional patients, grand rounds, high-fidelity simulation, and hospital exposure.

The successful candidate would be expected to have a strong foundation in basic sciences to teach clinical reasoning. Experience in computer-based teaching, use of high-fidelity simulation, and evaluation of clinical skills would be an advantage.

Course description

Introduction to Clinical Medicine (6 credits)

This course is designed to introduce students to the basic skills they will need to function as effective clinicians. History-taking and physical examination skills are taught in practical classes using the latest technological media, including Laerdal patient stimulators (adult, pediatric, and adolescent).

The course addresses a range of clinical skills necessary for future development as a physician, including clinical assessment and planning for the care of patients using the library and computer search of evidence-based information for patient care.

Didactics are blended with laboratory data interpretation, radiology and other imaging techniques, and electrocardiography, introducing core medical information ready for the third and fourth years of clinical training. Critical emphasis is on the development of ethical standards, specialization, as well as education and licensing requirements in the various states.

The class size is small to facilitate free discussion and pertinent technique demonstrations.
