The incumbent installs, maintains, repairs, and calibrates biomedical equipment; supervises technicians; manages inventory and warranties; and develops training for junior staff to ensure optimal equipment operation.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP

The Biomedical Engineer I will report to the Biomedical Engineer II.

 

NATURE & SCOPE

The Biomedical Engineer I is responsible for performing a variety of increasingly complex and specialized technical tasks in connection with installation, maintenance, calibration, commissioning, troubleshooting, repair and management of various types of biomedical equipment throughout the Authority.

 

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Biomedical Engineer I:

  • Diagnoses, repairs and conducts planned maintenance on biomedical equipment.
  • Directs, coordinates and evaluates the work of lower-level technicians.
  • Troubleshoots, services and repairs complex digital and analogue circuitry to maintain proper medical equipment operation and ensures optimum operation of equipment.
  • Interprets engineering and vendor information, diagrams and graphic illustrations to perform effective repair and maintenance on complex biomedical equipment.
  • Performs planned preventative maintenance on a wide variety of sophisticated electronic equipment by regular inspection of records and spot-checks of devices and systems.
  • Provides for the appropriate follow-up of warranty and service agreements.
  • Performs advanced repairs, calibration, safety testing, installation and commissioning of bio-medical equipment.
  • Completes all documentation and updates records/databases upon completion of task.
  • Manages the maintenance of parts inventory.
  • Supervises the proper care of spares, tools and test equipment and ensures calibration.
  • Assists in the development of junior staff by monitoring the work quality of subordinates and developing and instituting inhouse training sessions for subordinates on the proper repair, maintenance and use of biomedical equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required by the approved Authority.

 

KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of Biomedical Technology principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology.
  • Strong communicative and interpersonal skills.
  • Sound comprehensive and analytical ability.
  • Ability to persuade peers supervisors and subordinates to follow the desired courses of action.
  • Sound understanding of the Institutional and Operational Framework in which the Authority operates.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, clients and contractors/suppliers.

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Training as evidence by the possession of a First Degree in Electrical Engineering (EEET) or related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in maintenance of biomedical equipment or in a related technical field.
  • Any equivalent combination of training and qualification.
