The role involves installing, maintaining, and repairing geophysical instruments, managing equipment inventory, ensuring data communications, tracking station performance, and coordinating repairs and field operations.

 

Duties of the post include:

  • Installing, calibrating, repairing, and testing geophysical instruments and electronic equipment in the field and at Seismic Research Centre headquarters. 
  • Assisting in managing Seismic Research Centre’s equipment inventory.
  • Coordinating with factory support personnel to assess and, if necessary, arranging for repairs of equipment beyond local capacity.
  • Performing corrective and preventive maintenance of monitoring installations.
  • Liaising with local personnel and station operators to maintain data communications between remote installations and Seismic Research Centre headquarters.
  • Tracking station downtime, monitoring performance, and maintaining station metadata in coordination with other Seismic Research Centre staff.
  • Accessing station sites via hiking, boats, helicopters, and off-road vehicles.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by the Seismic Research Centre Director.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Applicants should be familiar with the University’s mission, structure, policies, and procedures, and must possess a strong working knowledge of electronics. Applicants must be proficient in troubleshooting, component-level repairs, and the ability to read and interpret technical documents (circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams, manuals).
  • Applicants must possess advanced skills in assembling, testing, and calibrating electronic equipment, and have basic knowledge of computer hardware, software, power protection devices, and network infrastructure. A strong problem-solving ability for electrical issues is required, along with competency in handling hand and machine tools safely and adhering to quality control standards. Applicants should have knowledge of Linux Command Line Interface and must be competent in the use of Microsoft Windows.
  • Applicants must be able to work in diverse environments, including extreme weather, remote locations, shared telecommunication sites, and office settings. They should have the ability to work in hazardous environments such as an active volcano. Applicants must have the physical capability to perform tasks such as lifting, bending, climbing towers, bush cutting, and carrying heavy loads. Applicants should also possess good vision, including close vision, colour perception, and depth perception.
  • Applicants must be willing to travel to remote locations, sometimes on short notice, for up to two weeks or longer, and work weekends and public holidays as needed. Strong written and oral communication skills in English are required, along with a valid driver’s permit and passport.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:

  • An approved Technician’s Diploma or Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology or in related fields such as Instrumentation Engineering and Telecommunications Engineering from a registered/accredited institution.

 

EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience in a similar technical or engineering role is essential. Demonstrated experience in instrumentation, electronics, and the integration of networking and communication devices would be an asset.
