The incumbent manages and supports IT infrastructure, hardware, software, and networks, assists users, facilitates procurement, repairs, and training, and provides technical support for departmental operations and fieldwork.

 

Duties of the post include:

  • Providing technical support regarding the configuration and maintenance of core networking infrastructure. 
  • Installing, maintaining and supporting computer hardware, software and peripheral devices performing additions, changes and upgrades when required.
  • Maintaining and managing the Department’s servers including licence managers, print servers and file servers.
  • Facilitating and assisting both staff and students with connectivity to the Department’s wireless network.
  • Advising and assisting staff and students in the purchase of computers and peripherals and providing functional checks and software installations of new computers bought through The University.
  • Facilitating video conferencing in the Department enabling real time two (2) way communications with the Department/Faculty and external parties.
  • Reporting warranty breakdowns to suppliers and vendors and ensuring the timely completion of repairs.
  • Requesting quotations for computer parts and accessories from vendors and assisting with the purchasing of these as required.
  • Administering policies and standards governing the Department’s IT infrastructure.
  • Responding to users’ queries and providing information, advice and technical support.
  • Providing training to staff and students in the use of computer software and peripherals.
  • Assisting in off-campus field works as needed, including the installation and maintenance of GPS and other data acquisition devices.
  • Performing any other related duties as assigned by the Chief Engineering Technician and/or Head, Department of Geomatics Engineering and Land Management.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge and familiarity with The University’s mission, structure, policies and procedures would be considered an asset. Applicants must possess specialised knowledge and technical training in Data Communications, Information Technology or Computer Engineering. Applicants must be willing to work flexible hours when required and preferably have an understanding of the OSH Act. Applicants should possess a valid Trinidad and Tobago Driver’s Permit, with more than two (2) years of driving experience.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:

  • An approved BSc degree in Computer Science, or other equivalent terminology such as Information Technology, or Information Systems, its equivalent or higher standard from a registered/accredited institution. Professional qualifications in Windows and Linux Server Technology will be an asset.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of GIS Web Protocols and Databases.

 

EXPERIENCE

Preferred:

  • At least three (3) years of relevant work experience.
