Responsible for maintaining, repairing, calibrating, and designing electronic/electrical systems, managing equipment lifecycle, procurement, and safety, supporting research and development, and collaborating on maintenance and development projects.

 

Duties of the post include:

  • Maintaining, repairing and calibrating electronic/ electrical equipment and systems that include but are not limited to laboratory equipment, audio-visual equipment, uninterruptable power supplies (up to 10KVA), computers and instrumentation equipment.
  • Commissioning and decommissioning of electronic/electrical equipment, ensuring proper installation, configuration, and safe removal of equipment as required.
  • Designing and constructing electronic circuits/systems involving both hardware and firmware components for research and product development for revenue generation.
  • Providing recommendations on equipment life cycle requirements such as maintenance strategies and spare parts acquisition.
  • Engaging with vendors for the procurement of replacement/new components, OEM diagnosis, and the outsourcing of relevant tasks.
  • Ensuring workshop tasks are organised and executed in a safe manner.
  • Collaborating with internal and external clients to formulate cost effective solutions for both maintenance and development projects.
  • Maintaining spare parts inventory and ensuring the functionality of workshop tools and equipment.
  • Adhering to the work management and accountability system, reporting systems, and report generation/preparation protocols/requirements, to maintain quality of service and for providing feedback for improvement.
  • Attending pre-approved training to improve and upgrade field specific skills in keeping with work schedule, requirements and exigencies of the department.
  • Performing any other relevant duties as may be assigned by the Head of Department (HOD) / Electronics Maintenance Officer.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Applicants should have knowledge and familiarity with the University’s mission, regulations, structure, policies and procedures.  Applicants should have knowledge of electrical lighting and power systems. Applicants should be capable to perform electrical/electronic troubleshooting and PCB repairs for both through-hole and surface mount technology. Applicants must be able to work independently. Applicants should possess strong soldering skills for through-hole and surface mount technology; including good technical understanding and application of digital and analog electronics. Applicants should possess knowledge of both electrical and mechanical systems of electromechanical equipment. Applicants should be proficient with programming languages, and firmware development; including the ability to interpret electrical/electronic schematics and piping and instrumentation diagrams. Applicants must possess knowledge of electrical safety best practices and knowledge of the requirements of the OSH Act. The successful candidate should possess experience working with embedded systems, Internet of Things (IoT), and development of related systems. Applicants must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite. Applicants must have practical/ hands-on experience in maintaining and repairing electronic/electrical equipment and systems, preferably, in a commercial or industrial setting such as manufacturing, or the services industries.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:

  • Candidates must possess one of the following its equivalent or higher standard of education from a recognised/ accredited institution: an approved Bachelor’s degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering/Electronics OR an approved General degree with Major in Electronics.

 

EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • At least three (3) years’ relevant work experience in an Electrical/Electronic environment.
