The North-East Regional Health Authority is seeking dynamic, proactive and forward-thinking individuals to fill the position of Medical Imaging Specialist (HPC/MIP 3) at the Port Maria Hospital.

 

Job Purpose:

Under the supervision of the Chief Medical Imaging Practitioner/Manager, Medical Imaging Services, the Medical Imaging Specialist will assist in planning, co-ordination, development of the Radiography services at the hospital. The position will also assist in setting and monitoring standards for the Radiography services as well as the organization of the Radiography workload. 

 

Qualification & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Diagnostic Imaging or Radiological Sciences (X-Ray and Ultrasonography).
  • Certificate in Supervisory Management 
  • Knowledge of Post-graduate Diagnostic Imaging Specialties. 
  • Registration with the Council for Professional Supplementary to Medicine (CPSM). 

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Act as an operator to carry out routine and specialist diagnostic Imaging investigations on patients in a safe manner using complex imaging equipment (Dual headed Gamma Cameras) in accordance with departmental protocols. 
  • Assist with the strategic planning, co-ordination and development of the Medical Imaging service at the hospital; ensuring that the service is in line with legal requirements, local priorities and national standards and meets the needs of patients. To participate in internal and external audit, quality assurance and quality control. 
  • Assist in the day-to-day supervision and training of Trainee Technologists or less experienced staff within the Medical Imaging section. 
  • Assist with long-term service planning in Clinical Governance and Risk Management aspects of Medical Imaging to ensure that the service meets current and future requirements. To achieve this, the post holder will have to consider working across care boundaries while maximizing the benefit and minimize the risk to patients. To ensure the long-term capacity and service planning (5-10 years). This will include regular service audits to ensure standards are maintained in line with national guidance 
  • Perform computer analysis and process complex patient studies using a variety software program utilizing knowledge of biological processes and anatomy including 3D anatomy. 
  • Aseptically dispense patient doses of radiopharmaceuticals using radionuclide calibrators employing dose decay calculations and dosing factors where appropriate to comply with international regulations.
  • Administer oral radioiodine therapy to patients. 
  • Ensure results of procedures are of a standard that meets the requirements of the departmental Quality System. 
  • Ensure performance of complex imaging equipment, calibrators and isolators within imaging medicine are fit for purpose by carrying out daily routine quality control checks, as well as more complex monthly and quarterly test procedures. 
  • Provide routine radiation protection advice to patients undergoing administration of radioactive materials and also to staff/relatives providing care to such patients 
  • Perform intravenous and subcutaneous injections of radiopharmaceuticals, following departmental procedures to ensure safe practice. 
  • To have overall responsibility for service policies and implementation and to contribute to the planning and implementation of all imaging medicine standard operating procedures ensuring regular review and update is completed.
