The incumbent provides patient-centered nursing care, including assessments, medication administration, record-keeping, patient support, and staff supervision, while ensuring safety, compliance, and participation in audits and conferences.

 

JOB PURPOSE

The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing patient needs, planning, implementation and evaluation of a programme of care which is evidence based utilizing all available resources and ensuring involvement with the patient, family, care givers and significant others. 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Admits patients in accordance with the Admission Policy of the Unit/ Ward.
  • Performs nursing assessment within one hour of patient’s admission.
  • Classifies patients/clients according to acuity of illness. 
  • Develops and implements nursing care plans making updates and modifications as appropriate. 
  • Empowers patients through counselling to take responsibility for their health, well-being and future lifestyle by practicing in an open transparent and inclusive manner, thereby ensuring patients have the relevant information to participate in decisions about their care. 
  • Maintains accurate patient records of nursing interventions and outcomes within agreed standards. 
  • Ensures handover of patients’ cases to incoming officer on completion of shift.
  • Provides safe and accurate administration of medication, intravenous fluids and blood transfusion. 
  • Maintains a therapeutic and safe environment. 
  • Contributes to the investigation of facts in adverse incidents. 
  • Practices strict isolation techniques in the care of patients, as appropriate
  • Practices seclusion and restraint techniques in the case of mentally ill patients, as appropriate. 
  • Evaluates and assess nursing care given by junior staff.
  • Provides support, empathy and reassurance to patients and their families in the delivery of patient care. 
  • Participates in case conferences as required. 
  • Participates in audit activities and research ensuring the best clinical practice is being delivered where appropriate. 
  • Works as a team player by maintaining good interpersonal relationships peers.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings as appropriate. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Associates Degree or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited educational institution. 
  • Current Registration with the Nursing Council of Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Post Basic Trauma Training 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses. 
  • Knowledge of current trends in Nursing. 
  • Ability to take personal accountability to identify, respond to and act on service needs, maintaining a focus on the patient/stakeholder. 
  • Ability to understand and value individual differences and to consider these differences when working with others. 
  • Ability to maintain a level of sensitivity and flexibility for the diverse needs and perspectives of others. 
  • Excellent inter-personal skills.
