The incumbent manages daily maintenance tasks, oversees plumbing repairs and inspections across health facilities, enforces safety protocols, and supervises the team to ensure reliable operations.

 

JOB PURPOSE

Reporting to the Manager, Maintenance; the Senior Plumber is responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining pipes, fixtures, fittings and systems used for water distribution and wastewater disposal. The incumbent will also be expected to conduct efficient maintenance servicing to ensure that all water-supply networks meet the standard of building codes and safety. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the day-to-day plumbing activities to be carried out by establishing activity priorities, assigning work tasks and scheduling work to effectively meet the health facility needs 
  • In collaboration with the Manager, Maintenance; develop, implement and maintain the maintenance and repair schedule for the work to be carried out 
  • Ensure that maintenance requests received are assigned and completed Communicate and sensitize staff about health and safety procedures, policies and protocols and ensure that adherence is maintained 
  • Ensure that assignments are reviewed and corrective actions are taken where incomplete and or poorly work done has been identified 
  • Ensure that delays in carrying maintenance work assigned are communicated to the Manager, Maintenance and the Head (s) of Departments where necessary Conduct routine inspection of plumbing systems to identify and assess deterioration and implement corrective actions 
  • Ensure that waste material from maintenance repairs is disposed of in accordance with established policies 
  • Perform routine operational checks related to plumbing including inspection, cleaning, lubrication and repair or replacement 
  • Ensure that maintenance tools and equipment used by the team are requested for use and returned in accordance with established policies and procedures 
  • Ensures that all maintenance tools and equipment assigned to the team are properly used 
  • Collect, review and provides a plan of action for all work orders and daily failure or breakdown reports for the health facilities 
  • Develop the daily priority list and supervise the completion of both scheduled and unscheduled work orders and emergency service calls 
  • Assist and supervise the repair, maintenance and use of equipment, including high and low-pressure, water pumps, water pipelines, sewage pumps and lines, fire pumps and fire hydrant systems 

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB:

  • May be required to work beyond normal working hours, weekends and public holidays from time to time 
  • Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor field environment; may be exposed to noise, dust, grease, fumes, noxious odours, and gases, mechanical and electrical hazards
  • Ability to stand, sit, bend, stoop, walk or crawl as necessary to supervise and perform maintenance and repairs 
  • Possess manual dexterity and finger coordination to grasp, hold, turn or squeeze objects, tools and equipment 
  • Possess a sense of vision and hearing at a necessary level to diagnose problems, use tools, and implement preventative or corrective solutions 
  • Work may be performed in confined areas such as those between ceilings and roofs; may include exposure to electrical shock and airborne particles 

 

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • HEART Diploma NVQ-J Level 4 Diploma in Plumbing 
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a similar capacity 
  • Certification or training in Supervisor Management would be an asset

 

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Good accountability and supervisory management skills 
  • Good interpersonal, leadership and management skills 
  • Be able to work on own initiative and make informed decisions 
  • Working knowledge of electrical maintenance 
  • Basic knowledge of Government’s Policies and Procedures 
  • Ability to use hand and power tools of the trade skillfully and safely 
  • Ability to commission/decommission air compressors, pumps and other plumbing equipment 
  • Must be able to read and interpret and work from sketches, plans and specifications
