The incumbent provides strategic leadership for BTVI’s academic programs, overseeing curriculum integrity, faculty initiatives, and accreditation. As an executive leader, they drive academic excellence, vocational training, and institutional growth.

 

Position Overview

The Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs (AVPAA) provides strategic leadership for all programmes across the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) network, including credit bearing as well as professional development, continuing education and customised offerings. He/She also has oversight for the Centre for Teaching and Learning and Examinations and Testing Services. The AVPAA drives curriculum review and development, ensuring integrity, quality and compliance with national and international accreditation standards. In concert with Deans, Heads of Department and Unit Heads, he/she has oversight for all full time and adjunct faculty related initiatives in alignment with BTVI’s mission to deliver workforce-focused technical and vocational education.

A member of the institution’s Executive Leadership Team, the AVPAA plays a critical role in maintaining academic excellence, supporting student success and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and accountability amongst other things.

 

Key Responisbilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Ensure the implementation of the institution’s vision, mission and pillars of the strategic plan.
  • Understand the institute’s special mission and history, appreciate all trade disciplines and be cognisant of current and future trends in the technical and vocational education and training environment, nationally, regionally and internationally.
  • Contribute to the institution’s strategic development, technological and communications plans as they apply to technical and vocational education and training.
  • Lead the systematic review, development and revision of programmes to ensure relevance, integrity, quality and alignment with workforce and industry needs.
  • Oversee programme evaluation processes, including assessment of learning outcomes, data analytics and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure curriculum innovation and instructional effectiveness.
  • Ensure programmes meet accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • Review departmental hiring requests and recommend new and replacement positions as required.
  • Ensure the continual professional development of Academic Affairs’ employees from orientation through the phases of their careers.
  • Ensure the regular evaluation of full-time and adjunct faculty and academic support staff as directed by BTVI’s policy.
  • Oversee the Graduation Committee to ensure that all requirements are met and that successful and cost-effective graduation ceremonies are held.
  • Work with direct reports to plan, develop and implement the annual budget for Academic Affairs, approve expenditures and stay within budget.
  • Analyse resource allocation decisions with an ROI lens, being prepared to recommend the re-allocation of human and financial resources to other uses that better support the mission.
  • Assess the efficiency (costs and productivity of inputs) and effectiveness (outcome achievement) of Academic Affairs’ units on an ongoing basis.

Compliance, Quality Assurance and Policy Oversight

  • Ensure adherence to BTVI’s policies, procedures and academic protocols.
  • Review existing policies, protocols and procedures and develop new ones as needed.
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with national and international accreditation and quality assurance requirements.
  • Produce regular reports on key performance indicators (KPIs) as requested.
  • Provide guidance on academic governance matters, programmatic and institutional standards.
  • Support audits, accreditation reviews and institutional reporting requirements.

Student and Academic Support

  • Provide oversight and support for academic advising processes.
  • Monitor the success rate (and attrition rate) of programmes and ensure the implementation of programme outcome strategies as required.
  • Review and adjudicate grade appeals and academic concerns in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Collaborate with the Student Affairs Division to enhance retention, progression, completion and placement outcomes.
  • Ensure fair and transparent academic decision-making.

Operational

  • Coordinate with the Office of the Registrar and Deans in the preparation and approval of class schedules each semester/session.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Team, Deans, Registrar and External Affairs on the compilation of information for the website, catalogue and related publications.
  • Coordinate with the Deans, Heads of Department and approve faculty workloads and non-instructional assignments to full and adjunct faculty.
  • Delegate appropriate tasks.

 

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Education, Academic Administration or a related field (Earned Terminal Degree/Doctorate preferred)

 

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education or technical/vocational training.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum review, revision and development.
  • Strong knowledge of quality assurance frameworks.
  • Experience supervising faculty and managing educational operations.
  • Forward-thinking leader in a changing environment.
  • Budgeting and financial management experience.
  • Excellent speaking, writing and presentation skills.
  • A high level of computer literacy.
  • Ability to quickly interpret a variety of information/data in written, oral or graphic form.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to pivot and reprioritise.
  • Strong supervisory, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Skills in examining operations and procedures, formulating policy and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Positive and strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
