The Biomedical Equipment Technician maintains, repairs, tests, and installs medical equipment, diagnoses malfunctions, keeps detailed service records, and trains clinical staff on proper equipment operation.

 

JOB PURPOSE

Reporting to the Biomedical Engineer; the incumbent is responsible for the supporting the operational efficiency of the Unit by testing, inspecting, calibrating and repairing of biomedical equipment and systems and also ensuring that all biomedical equipment and systems are operating efficiently with minimal downtime. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs scheduled maintenance servicing and repair of biomedical equipment such as dental chairs, suction machines, blood pressure machines, autoclaves and dialysis systems as directed while ensuring safe and effective operating conditions 
  • Installs and commissions/decommissions and assembles biomedical equipment
  • Tests and calibrates components using a variety of manuals, troubleshooting techniques, and code requirements 
  • Diagnoses equipment malfunctions with accuracy and precision by testing the functionality of equipment taking into account accuracy, sensitivity, and selectivity measurements;
  • Ensures biomedical equipment and internal circuitry meet standard requirements in conducting installation 
  • Informs biomedical equipment users and the Biomedical Engineer of status updates or maintenance needs identified 
  • Liaises with clinical staff to identify and remedy scheduling problems;
  • Maintains documentation of new equipment, inspection and equipment repair and failures;
  • Provides guidance to medical staff on how to operate biomedical equipment
  • Performs other related duties that may be assigned by the Biomedical Engineer 

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB:

  • May be required to work beyond normal working hours, weekends and public holidays from time to time 
  • May be exposed to noise, dust, grease, wastewater, fumes, noxious odours, radiation, infectious disease and gases, and mechanical and electrical hazards 
  • Ability to stand, sit, bend, stoop, walk or crawl as necessary to supervise and perform maintenance and repairs 
  • Possess manual dexterity and finger coordination to grasp, hold, turn or squeeze objects, tools and equipment 
  • Possess a sense of vision and hearing at a necessary level to diagnose problems, use tools, and implement preventative or corrective solutions 
  • Work may be performed in confined areas such as those between ceilings and roofs; may include exposure to electrical shock and airborne particles 

 

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering 
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a similar capacity 
  • Any equivalent combination of qualification and experience 

 

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Sound to communicate effectively orally and in writing

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Good customer relations skills 
  • Good skills in teamwork and cooperation 
  • Knowledge of technical aspects of biomedical equipment and its operation, repair and maintenance 
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology as applied to the use of biomedical equipment 
  • Ability to analyze, repair and test biomedical equipment and systems
  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance. 
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds of equipment; to push/pull equipment carts
  • Ability to run diagnostic programs and tests
