The Deputy Head of School supports the Head of School in achieving high educational standards, leading the academic programme from EYP through SYP, and ensuring curriculum and assessment alignment with the school’s mission.

 

Job Overview

The Deputy Head of School (DHS) will be a leading member of the School Management teams at BHS and report directly to the Head of School. The key function of the Deputy Head of School will be to assist the Head of School to ensure the achievement of the highest possible educational standards, and to create an atmosphere and structures in which pupils feel valued and involved in the development of their school where staff have high expectations of them.

The Deputy Head of School will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of the academic programme from EYP through SYP. They will be assisted by other senior academic administrative faculty at various levels.

The Deputy Head of School will liaise directly with the Heads of Primary, Secondary, and SYP regarding the curriculum and assessment to ensure optimum alignment with the school’s mission and strategic plan.

The Deputy Head of School will carry out the duties and responsibilities of the Head of School during all absences of the Head of School.

 

Main Responsibilities:

Academics Programme

  • Oversee all curriculum, instruction and assessment matters for EYP to Year 13.
    • Collaborate with, supervise and support division heads, department heads, coordinators to maintain BHS’ high academic standards including curriculum documentation, teaching, learning, internal and external testing and school examinations, as well as external examinations.
    • Maintain data regarding academic results and prepare the data for the Board of Trustees.
  • In concert with the Head of School, serve as project lead of the accreditation process with the Council of Independent School (CIS) and New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).
  • Monitor staff professional growth process and assist division heads with professional development support
  • Collaborate with division heads on the school reporting system and timetable.
  • Work with division heads to develop a mission aligned professional development plan.
  • Work closely with the division heads and key pastoral staff to ensure consistent good standards of discipline, including appropriate disciplinary decisions.

Management

  • The DHS will serve on appropriate Board Committees, as assigned by the Head of School.
  • The DHS will collaborate with the Admissions Director on all aspects of recruitment and retention.
  • The DHS will work closely with members of the Senior Management Teams on issues such as Alumnae Affairs, Fund-raising, Facilities Planning and Use.
  • The DHS will be responsible for overseeing the appraisal process for all teaching staff.
  • The DHS will collaborate with the Health and Safety Officer on all safety related issues, including fire-drills, evacuation procedures etc.
  • The DHS will assume such other reasonable duties as delegated by the Head of School.


Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, appropriate teacher certification; a successful candidate must also qualify for certification by the Bermuda Educators Council.
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 10 years experience in independent school education in an international setting, with direct teaching and leadership in the EYP, IPC, IGCSE, A Levels and IB Diploma Programme.
  • Proficiency in timetabling and student information system software and tools (e.g., Excel, SIMs, Veracross, Timetabler, or similar).
  • Strong supervision and leadership skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to inspire and work well with colleagues, parents, students, alumni, trustees and the community at large.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.


The successful candidate will be expected to provide a recent criminal check and complete SCARS training.
