Overview

The Office of Finance oversees the day-to-day financial operations and long-term financial planning of the University, including the University Centre and all five Campuses. Its remit includes budgeting, financial reporting, treasury and pension fund management, management of government contributions, regional sponsored research management, investment management and the financial administration of affiliated entities such as the Norman Manley Law School and The UWI Regional Endowment Fund.

The Financial Manager I, Accounting and Financial Operations, will support the financial management and accounting operations of the Office of Finance. This includes preparing comprehensive financial statements and reports for the Centre at the Mona Campus to inform the deliberations of the University Finance and General Purposes Committee and the Annual Business Meeting of University Council. The role also entails oversight of the Purchases and Payables function, management of the fixed assets process and supervision of the relevant staff. The successful candidate will report directly to the Deputy University Bursar in the Office of Finance.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Prepare Financial Statements and Reports for the Centre at Mona of The University of the West Indies for tabling at the University Finance and General Purposes Committee and the Annual Business Meeting of University Council;
  • Manage the Purchases and Payables function and supervision of staff;
  • Manage the recording, accounting and physical verification of property plant and equipment
  • Perform general accounting and operational duties including reviewing and posting journal entries, approval of payment documentation and liaising with Bursary staff at other campuses on accounting related matters;
  • Participate in the annual external financial audit and periodic internal audit processes;
  • Ensure adherence to The UWI’s internal policies as well as generally accepted accounting practices and standards;
  • Provide financial guidance on matters impacting the accounting and financial operations of the Office of Finance and by extension, the University Centre; and
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the University Bursar and the Deputy University Bursar.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate must: 

  • be a Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualified professional; and
  • have a strong academic foundation supported by a Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field

 

Applicants should also possess:

  • A minimum of seven (7) years’ professional experience, with at least five (5) years post-qualification working in accounting environment at the supervisory level
  • Demonstrated expertise and strong background in preparing financial statements and reports and supporting both internal and external audit processes
  • Proven knowledge of accounting procedures, guidelines and standards, including International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
  • Proficiency in enterprise finance systems such as Banner Finance along with strong competence in the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc) 
  • Experience working within a university or in the public sector environment would be a distinct asset
