The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine wishes to invite suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Lecturer in Visual Arts (Design).

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • The successful candidate must possess at minimum, a PhD or DDes from a recognized university, in Design or Design Studies or a closely related field.

 

Candidates should also possess:

  • At least five (5) years’ experience in teaching and curriculum development at the tertiary level
  • A good record of research and publications in reputable, peer-reviewed journals

 

Proficiency in two or more of the following areas:

  • Design for Social Change 
  • Product Design 
  • Environment Design 
  • UX Design 
  • Branding Design 
  • Motion Graphic Design 
  • Game Design
  • AI and Generative Design

 

Candidates with the following would have an advantage:

  • Master’s Degree in Visual Arts with established applied design practice and a research agenda focused on contemporary issues, including sustainability and eco-conscious design, digital transformation, and inclusive and accessible design
  • Evident track record of research and publications or creative practice and exhibitions of international quality
  • Knowledge of Caribbean Design Practices with an appreciation of current conversations and global developments in design thinking 

 

The following would be considered assets:

  • Certificate in university teaching and learning
  • Evidence of continuing professional development related to teaching and learning, and subject knowledge
  • Experience teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Proficiency in supervision of student projects, research and departmental exhibitions
  • Proficiency in the design, evaluation and development of Visual Arts curriculum and curriculum materials

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching courses in the Certificate, Bachelor’s Degree and Postgraduate programmes in Visual Arts
  • Developing and evaluating Visual Arts curricula in partnership with other Faculty members, regional or international stakeholders
  • Supervising student projects and research
  • Engaging in academic advising
  • Managing and curating art design graduation exhibitions
  • Managing outreach projects
  • Undertaking a major responsibility for the supervision and/or direction of annual Departmental exhibitions

 

Personal Attributes

The Campus places high priority on individuals of integrity who can work well in a team and student friendly environment. Candidates should also possess good communication and interpersonal skills. A good command of both oral and written English is essential.

 

Candidate should also:

  • Possess a proven appreciation of the inter-relatedness of the arts with a willingness to integrate the arts
  • Be self-motivated with strong organizational skills
  • Be able to inspire and mobilize student involvement in projects and productions
  • Be able to teach in multiple modes such as distance education, Face-to-Face, online, hybrid and blended environments
  • Possess good Information Technology skills in teaching
