Provides nursing care, selected medical care and treatment to patients in primary care facilities.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Certificate/Degree Nursing from accredited School in Registered General Nursing
  • Registered Midwife/Post Basic Psychiatric Nursing in the case of a male
  • Master’s Degree – Nursing (Family Nurse Practitioner) 
  • Updated registration with the Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse and a Registered Midwife

Key Responsibilities will include:

Clinical 

  • Interviewing patients and/or other family members in order to obtain a health history. 
  • Observing and analyzing signs and symptoms, complete a comprehensive physical examination including developmental assessments. 
  • Evaluating findings clinically and record data systematically, concisely and accurately. 
  • Formulating appropriate medical/nursing diagnoses.
  • Performing and/ or requests selected diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient’s clinical problems and health care needs. 
  • Prescribing drugs and other forms of treatment e.g. physical therapy or therapeutic procedures relevant to the patients’ problems. 
  • Initiates and/or implements treatment and management of patients.
  • Evaluating care given and modify treatment and management as indicated by patient’s health problems. 
  • Discussing selected cases with District Medical Officer and/or other health professionals to ensure continuity of care and observance of standard practice.
  • Recording systematical, concisely and accurately data gathered, assessment made, treatment and management instituted, evaluations, modifications and any other relevant information. 
  • Managing emergencies as they arise such as haemorrhage, shock and unconsciousness. 
  • Conducting curative and Specialist clinics eg. Sexually Transmitted Infections, Skin, Diabetic and Hypertensive in Primary and Secondary Care. 
  • Consulting with physician when in doubt and in situations beyond the scope of his/her practice. 
  • Acting as a consultant to nursing staff re special nursing care problems.
  • Demonstrating advanced techniques in the management of selected chronic illnesses and psycho-social conditions. 
  • Referring patients to specialized health resources for treatment when necessary.
  • Conducting home visits and educate families about their illnesses and treatment.
  • Supervising the care of chronically ill/ disabled family members. 
  • Conducting screening clinics and satellite clinics where applicable. 

Educational: 

  • Educating patients and their families about their: 
    • Illness 
    • Medications (compliance and side effects) 
    • Diet/nutrition 
    • Specific aspects of care 
    • Follow up care 
    • Disease prevention and control 
    • Counseling patient/ significant others in the maintenance of health
  • Educating/teaching individual/groups about measures to promote and maintain health and prevent accident and illness. 
  • Participating in formal and informal continuing educational programmes in order to increase level of knowledge and skills. 

Administration 

  • Participating in budgetary preparation of the health care facility. 
  • Participating in planning, organizing, coordinating and evaluate management of the health care facility. 
  • Planning and coordinating programmes for programme areas of responsibility e.g. Rheumatic Fever, Curative, Diarrhoeal Disease and Sexually Transmitted Diseases. 
  • Supervising the clinical experiences of Nurse Practitioner Students.
  • Orientating new graduate Nurse Practitioners. 
  • Participates in planning and policy making. 
  • Delegating health care functions to appropriate members of the health team.
  • Submitting itinerary of work and monthly report to the Supervisory Nurse Practitioner. 

Research 

  • Utilizing epidemiological approach to monitor health status within designated areas.
  • Initiating and participating in research-related activities. 
  • Utilizing research findings to improve the delivery of health care.
  • Publishing research work done. 
  • Identifying and executes research projects of a clinical or administrative nature to improve the delivery of patient care/nursing education/administration.
  • Facilitating research work by graduate Nurse Practitioners to meet current health needs of the population. 

Public Relations 

  • Cooperating and collaborating with members of health and allied agencies to provide quality health care to individuals, families and communities. 
  • Explaining the role of the Nurse Practitioner to individuals/groups.
  • Assisting in conflict resolution at the work place. 
  • Assisting in the maintenance of ‘esprit de corp’ at the work place. 
  • Advocating the delivery of health care in a consumer-friendly environment.
  • Facilitating the involvement of graduate Nurse Practitioners in Non-Government Organizations for improved patient/family care. 

General 

  • Is responsible and accountable for her own professional growth and development.
  • Participating in activities of professional organization. 
  • Presenting papers at seminars/conferences. 
  • Working voluntary and non-governmental organizations for the benefit of the agency/institution and the community. 
  • Ensuring that the required educational hours mandated for relicensing are met each year.
