The Psychiatric Nursing Aide is a member of the health team who assists in the care of mentally ill clients and their families in primary, secondary or tertiary public health facilities or other mental health care facilities.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Psychiatric Nursing Aide Certification from a recognized institution 
  • A minimum of two (2) subjects at CXC or GCE equivalent including English Language and a numeric subject 
  • At least one-year experience in a similar capacity 

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • General understanding of mental health and behavioral disorders 
  • Knowledge of skills in safe restraining techniques 
  • Good oral and written communication skills 
  • Good interpersonal and customer service skills 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides support on the Psychiatric Emergency Outreach Team (PEMT) by assisting with the physical restraint and care of patients who are at risk for injury to self or others.
  • Assists with crisis intervention for individuals, families and within the community.
  • Assists the Community Mental Health Nurse with patient care and home visits.
  • Provides support in the mental health clinics by monitoring patient’s activities during clinic sessions. 
  • Assists patients with their personal hygiene and grooming. 
  • Cleans and cares for equipment and appliances. 
  • Assists in maintaining a clean and safe environment for patient care. 
  • Assists clients with meeting nutritional needs by serving, feeding and observing patients at meal time. 
  • Accompanies ambulant patients from one location to another for treatment and diagnostic procedures. 
  • Accompanies discharged patients to place of residence, as deemed necessary.
  • Participates in occupational and group activities geared towards assisting patients in the rehabilitation process. 
  • Observes changes in patient’s behaviour and reports to the nurse in charge.
  • Collects urine samples and does simple urine tests as directed by the nurse.
  • Assists in pressure area care and positioning immobilized patients. 
  • Monitors patient’s visitors and checks articles brought in. 
  • Ensures proper care and storage of patient’s linen, clothing and other personal effects according to unit policy. 
  • Utilizes therapeutic communication to enhance effective staff/patient relationship.
  • Assists in maintaining patients’ registers and enters patients’ biographic data on daily worksheets and other relevant forms. 
  • Assists with monitoring compliance with clinic and home visits and informs the Community Mental Health Nurse 
  • Assists with conducting health promotional activities.
