The Campus Police Corporal is responsible for enforcement of criminal laws, ordinances, traffic laws and University regulations related to the welfare of students, faculty, staff and the general public.

 

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position of University Police Corporal is required to perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to the following: 

  • Act as a liaison officer between the University, The Royal Bahamas Police Force and other Law Enforcement Agencies; 
  • Enforce all relevant laws as well as university regulations; 
  • Monitor the activities of suspicious intruders; 
  • Detain and arrest individuals suspected of criminal activity; 
  • Patrol the grounds of the university; 
  • Respond to public disruptions; 
  • Maintain the peace and crowd control during University events; 
  • Direct and enforce traffic and parking regulations; 
  • Ensure that all matters of a criminal nature are properly handled, documented and reported;
  • Ensure that all necessary reports and files are prepared and submitted in a timely manner;
  • Guard official and visiting dignitaries; 
  • Ensure that all diaries, logs and reports of daily activities are submitted in a timely manner;
  • Serve as supervisor in the absence of the University Police Sergeant; 
  • Provide stationary security post coverage, including but not limited to signing vehicular and pedestrian traffic onto the campus at the ingress points; 
  • Exercise sound judgment and discretion at all times; 
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with both internal and external constituencies and co-workers; 
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to investigate all criminal matters of a serious nature; 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; 
  • Ability to complete routine paperwork; 
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle; 
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills; 
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; 
  • Knowledge of University policies, and regulations; 
  • Ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety codes, regulations, and procedures;
  • Skill in providing protection services to individuals on campus.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must possess a valid Bahamian driver’s license; 
  • Must obtain First Aid and CPR Certification within 360 days of hire and must maintain certification as a condition of employment. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Work may involve moderate to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises; 
  • Moderate to physical activity; requires handling of average-weight objects and standing or walking for extended periods of time; 
  • Under normal and stressful situations, officers must be capable of communicating orally in the English language in such a manner as to clearly transmit information via the police radio, telephone, public address system, or direct conversation; 
  • Officers will be required to work any shift or day of the week depending upon departmental needs. Periodically, work hours may be extended beyond the normal work day to accomplish the necessary work. Officers may be periodically ordered in to work to assist in handling emergency situations involving national and natural disasters, traffic and other hazards, special activities, or court testimony.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5 GCSE including English Language & Math with grade, “C” or better; OR UB’s Literacy/Numeracy Test - Satisfactory accepted; 
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Law Enforcement and Community Policing techniques.
