Job Overview:

The Biomedical Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, calibration, repair, and troubleshooting of a wide range of medical equipment and devices within our hospital system. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that all biomedical equipment is functioning properly, meeting safety standards, and supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care.

 

Responsibilities:

Equipment Maintenance and Repair:

  • Conduct routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on medical equipment, including but not limited to, patient monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, defibrillators, and diagnostic imaging systems.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions, determine root causes, and perform necessary repairs to ensure optimal performance.
  • Collaborate with manufacturers and suppliers to obtain technical support and order necessary parts for equipment repair.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work performed, parts used, and equipment status.

Calibration and Testing:

  • Perform calibration and testing procedures on medical equipment to ensure accurate measurements and functionality.
  • Follow established protocols and standards to calibrate equipment within specified intervals.
  • Document calibration activities, including calibration dates, results, and any necessary adjustments made.

Safety Compliance:

  • Adhere to safety regulations, infection control protocols, and industry standards in the maintenance and use of biomedical equipment.
  • Conduct safety inspections on medical equipment to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety guidelines.
  • Report any safety issues or incidents to the appropriate personnel and assist in implementing corrective actions.
  • Equipment Installation and Training:
  • Assist in the installation and setup of new medical equipment, ensuring proper functioning and integration with existing systems.
  • Provide training and technical support to healthcare staff on the proper use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of biomedical equipment.
  • Develop instructional materials, user manuals, and standard operating procedures for equipment use and maintenance.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of equipment inventory, maintenance activities, repairs, and service history.
  • Generate reports on equipment performance, maintenance schedules, and repair activities for management review.
  • Collaborate with the Facilities team to manage asset tracking and equipment lifecycle management systems.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including physicians, nurses, IT personnel, and vendors, to address equipment-related issues and ensure smooth operation.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to understand equipment needs, provide technical support, and address concerns promptly.
  • Stay informed about advancements in medical technology and industry trends to recommend equipment upgrades or replacements when necessary.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in biomedical equipment maintenance and repair is required.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment principles, functionality, and safety standards.
  • Familiarity with Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation standards and regulations is desirable.
  • Strong technical skills in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of medical equipment, including but not limited to patient monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, defibrillators, and diagnostic imaging systems.
  • Proficiency in using specialized tools, software, and diagnostic equipment for equipment calibration and testing.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic circuits, computer systems, and networking principles.
  • Understanding of biomedical equipment management principles, including asset tracking, inventory control, and lifecycle management.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex equipment malfunctions and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work with precision to ensure accurate calibration and repair of equipment.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with healthcare professionals, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulatory standards, including FDA regulations and medical device guidelines.
