The incumbent performs clinical examinations, diagnoses and treats dental conditions, educates patients on oral health, and develops departmental policies while coordinating public health programs.

 

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Medical Officer (Health), the Dental Surgeon will be responsible for the delivery of professional dental services and preventative dental care in a community health centre setting. In accordance with the Government’s policies, regulations/legal requirements and guidelines the dental surgeon will ensure continuous improvements in the quality of care in the delivery of these health services. 

 

Minimum Required Qualification and Experience:

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery / Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry from an accredited Institution Plus 
  • Advance Education in General Dentistry with two (2) years’ experience OR 
  • Internship with five (5) years’ progressive experience in Dentistry 
  • Fully registered with the Dental Council of Jamaica 

 

Specific Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • • Sound Knowledge of the National Health Services and the Public Health Act & Regulations
  • • Expert knowledge of the Dental Act & Regulations 
  • • Ability to provide effective leadership and work as part of a team; 
  • • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with a wide cross section of professionals and organizations; 
  • • Excellent time management skills; 
  • • Excellent communication skills 

 

Key responsibilities will include but not limited:

  • Ability to perform clinical examinations, diagnosis of dental abnormalities, treatment planning and basic comprehensive dental care. 
  • Educate individuals on the nature of oral health related conditions and on the general promotion of oral health related disease prevention 
  • Prepares specific reports as may be required.
  • Designs and develops and implements appropriate dental department policies, protocols and procedures in compliance with the most current accepted professional standards as directed by the Dental Consultant 
  • Assists in the coordination and integration of the department’s dental programmes and services with other corporate and public health programmes and services for the welfare of the department’s patients
