Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for establishing and maintaining organizational framework for delivery of optimal patient care and planning, organizing, controlling and coordinating the nursing activities.

 

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BSc. Nursing Administration/Master Degree Nursing Administration or equivalent Degree in Administration or Management 
  • BSc. Registered General Nursing from an accredited institution. 
  • Certificate in Midwifery 
  • Current RN and Midwifery Licenses with the Nursing Council of Jamaica. 
  • Minimum of four (4) years including Nursing Management in addition to clinical practice. 

 

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Professional nursing theory and practice 
  • Principles of hospital administration and modern management practices 
  • Ability to identify the need to organize and participate in effective in-service training
  • Nursing, health and related legislation 
  • National Health & Organizational Policy 
  • Research methodology, Human Resources Management, Industrial Relations and Financial Management. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

Administration/Management: 

  • Develop and implement the mission objectives policies and standards for nursing care of patients which reflects the mission of the hospital. 
  • Assesses, plans organize, delegates, nursing functions and equitably allocating staff to maintain efficient and effective patient/client care. 
  • Share the responsibility for the management of the institution with the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) & Chief Executive Officer (CEO). 
  • Assumes administration of the institution in the absence of the Senior Medical Officer, Administrator, Chief Executive Officer. 
  • Maintains communication between nursing personnel and other members of the health team re administrative policies. 
  • Ensures that nursing personnel are cognizant of their roles and functions. 
  • Assists staff to interpret policies of the Ministry of Health and the mission and objectives of the Institution to ensure compliance. 
  • Plan strategies with supervisors for efficient administration of units. 
  • Gives guidance to nursing and support staff and other health team members, as necessary. Assists in problem solving techniques. 
  • Conducts interviews and counseling sessions and refer for disciplinary measures as necessary.
  • Delegates responsibility with commensurate authority to Unit Supervisors through daily, weekly and monthly conferences. 
  • Maintains good interpersonal relationships with nursing personnel and other members of the health team. 
  • Communicates with community-based organization through intersectoral collaboration.
  • Liaises with professional organization to maintain optimal nursing standards and patient care.
  • Initiates and maintains quality assurance meetings to assess patient care. 
  • Collates 24 hours ward reports for patient care, assessment of staff assignments, and supervisory reports. 
  • Maintains accurate records and submits written reports e.g. supervisory reports, interviews, incidents anecdotal notes to administrator. 
  • Initiates review of administrative tools e.g. organizational charts, job description, ward and policy procedure manuals, staff assignments, nursing service mission and objectives. 
  • Creates an environment for free discussion with personnel through interviewing and counseling.
  • Evaluate, reviews and submits performance evaluations especially for continuing education and promotion. 
  • Processes and approves leave applications. 

Clinical: 

  • Participates in Ward conferences to ensure accuracy of records, staff performance and patient care. 
  • Monitors patient care through administrative rounds and nursing audits and clinical teaching rounds. 

Education: 

  • Identifies specific needs of personnel and upgrade their knowledge and skills.
  • Plans orientation for newly assigned staff and provides clinical experience for students in nursing administration, or specially assigned staff from Ministry of Health, with a view to evaluate and recommend for promotion. 
  • Plans formal inservice education programmes for staff. 
  • Conducts teaching sessions during administrative rounds. 
  • Participates in Community Education session e.g. Citizens Associations, Service Clubs and Career Week Talks. 
  • Participates in selection of candidates for Basic training and inservice training. 

Research: 

  • Initiates and participates in nursing research to improve patient/care and nursing management techniques and nursing practice. 
  • Collates data on utilization of staff and reports accordingly. 
  • Responsible for own professional development through post-basic educational programmes.
  • Responsible for her own practice. 
  • Involved in Community and non-Government organizations for the benefits of the institution.
