The incumbent conducts research on mosquitoes and arthropods, studies insect habitats, identifies species, supervises disease eradication programs, diagnoses malaria specimens, and compiles field data reports.

 

Distinguishing Features of Work

An employee in this class performs professional research and investigational activities in the identification, control and eradication of various species of mosquitoes and other insects which may transmit diseases in man and animals. Work also includes the supervision and training of technical and laboratory staff engaged in insect vector control. Work is performed with considerable independence and is reviewed by a superior officer through discussions, reports and analysis of results achieved.

 

Examples of Work

  • Performs operational investigations and basic research on mosquitoes and other arthropods in Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Studies insect distribution and habitat and recommends methods to prevent importation propagation and spread of injurious types.
  • Identifies and classifies various species of insects and recommends methods of control and eradication where necessary.
  • Supervises malaria and aedes aegypti eradication programmes to determine and prevent possible reintroduction of malaria from endemic countries; and also to determine residual activity of insecticidal sprays and larvicides.
  • Supervises the diagnosis of blood specimens for malaria parasites.
  • Compiles and analyses data collected in the field and prepares reports.
  • Performs related work as required.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices of vector investigation and control including the use of animals and parasites and other media in the control of harmful vectors.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Science of Entomology and insect diseases.
  • Considerable knowledge of scientific research techniques and procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge in susceptibility testing of insects to various insecticides.
  • Considerable knowledge concerning the use of fogging and spraying equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of insect genetics.
  • Knowledge of modern insecticides and their formulations with synergists, solvents and suspending agents.
  • Skill in the use of laboratory equipment connected with entomological investigations.
  • Ability to conduct investigations on mosquitoes and other insects.
  • Ability to compile and analyse relative data and prepare reports on same.
  • Ability to identify harmful insects and prescribe methods of control.
  • Ability to train scientific assistants in laboratory work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the staff and the public.

 

Minimum Experience and Training

  • Considerable experience as an Entomologist and Training as evidenced by a Bachelor of Science Degree with zoology as a major subject, supplemented by post graduate training in entomology with special reference to insects of medical importance; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
