The EVS Supervisor leads daily cleaning, infection prevention, and support services operations, ensuring regulatory compliance and high standards of hygiene while managing staff performance to foster a culture of safety and operational excellence.

 

Overview:

The Supervisor of Environmental Services (EVS) is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and supervising the daily operations of the Environmental Services Department during assigned shifts. This position ensures that environmental cleaning, infection prevention, waste management, floor care, linen distribution, and support services are performed in accordance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and evidence-based healthcare environmental hygiene practices.

The Supervisor provides operational leadership by managing staffing, scheduling, employee performance, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

 

Essential Functions:

Leadership & Operations:

  • Supervise daily Environmental Services operations.
  • Plan and coordinate staffing assignments.
  • Monitor departmental productivity and workflow.
  • Ensure completion of all assigned cleaning and support services.
  • Coordinate patient discharge room cleaning.
  • Respond to emergency cleaning requests.
  • Supervise operating room turnover support.
  • Ensure public areas remain clean, safe, and presentable.
  • Balance staffing resources according to patient census and workload.
  • Coordinate special cleaning projects.
  • Support departmental emergency response activities.

Staff Leadership:

  • Supervise frontline leadership staff.
  • Conduct daily shift huddles.
  • Coach and mentor associates.
  • Complete performance evaluations.
  • Address attendance and performance concerns.
  • Recommend disciplinary actions when appropriate.
  • Recognize employee achievements.
  • Promote employee engagement.
  • Foster teamwork and collaboration.
  • Support succession planning and leadership development.

Infection Prevention & Safety:

  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention policies.
  • Monitor environmental cleaning quality.
  • Conduct environmental hygiene inspections.
  • Verify disinfectant contact times.
  • Monitor appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure proper isolation room cleaning.
  • Support outbreak response activities.
  • Collaborate with infection prevention personnel.
  • Participate in Healthcare-Associated Infection (HAI) reduction initiatives.

Quality Management:

  • Conduct environmental quality inspections.
  • Monitor departmental quality indicators.
  • Review audit findings and implement corrective action plans.
  • Support accreditation readiness.
  • Participate in regulatory surveys.
  • Lead departmental quality improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor service recovery trends.

Human Resources:

  • Participate in employee recruitment and selection.
  • Conduct new employee orientation.
  • Complete performance evaluations.
  • Recommend promotions and disciplinary actions.
  • Address employee concerns.
  • Monitor attendance and leave usage.
  • Maintain staffing schedules.
  • Coordinate employee training.
  • Approve time records.
  • Maintain personnel documentation.

Financial Management:

  • Monitor labor utilization.
  • Control overtime expenses.
  • Assist with departmental budgeting.
  • Monitor supply usage.
  • Support inventory control.
  • Recommend cost-saving initiatives.
  • Monitor equipment utilization.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure departmental compliance with:
    • Organizational policies and procedures
    • OSHA regulations
    • Ministry of Health regulations

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Prepare operational reports.
  • Review productivity metrics.

  • Coordinate equipment maintenance.

Customer Experience:

Emergency Management:

  • Maintain departmental emergency preparedness.

 

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • Associate Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Environmental Health, Public Health, Hospitality Management, or a related field;

OR

  • High School Diploma/GED with a minimum of seven (7) years of progressive Environmental Services experience in a healthcare setting, including leadership responsibilities.

Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years of Environmental Services experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Minimum two (2) years of supervisory or frontline leadership experience.
  • Experience with quality improvement and regulatory compliance.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
  • Experience preparing for accreditation surveys.
  • Experience using EVS management software.
  • Lean process improvement experience.
  • Professional Certifications (Preferred)
  • Certified Health Care Environmental Services Professional (CHESP)
  • Certified Health Care Environmental Services Technician (CHEST)
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification
