The General Counsel leads all legal functions of the Corporation—ensuring compliance, enforcing rights, advising departments and the Board, overseeing transactions, and fulfilling statutory duties under the UDC and Companies Acts.

 

Job Purpose:

The General Counsel has overall responsibility for planning, directing, organizing and controlling all legal activities, which result in ensuring that all obligations of the Corporation are met, and all rights enforced.  In addition, the incumbent directs and coordinates all activities pursuant to requirement of the UDC Act and its regulations including the Jamaica Company’s Act. The General Counsel leads the department in the provision of legal advice to all departments and subsidiaries, the execution of conveyancing and related transactions; reviews laws and statutes related to the Corporation; drafting of legal documents and participating in or leading negotiations on behalf of the Corporation, and also provides advice to the Board.

 

Specific Knowledge, Qualification and Experience include but are not limited to:

  • Bachelors of Law (LLB) Degree
  • Certificate of Legal Education admitted and qualified to practice at the Jamaican Bar
  • Minimum of Ten (10) years’ experience as an Attorney-at Law with experience in Commercial Law, Conveyancing, Jamaica Labour Laws, Litigation Procedures, Contract Law, Company Law and Practices
  • Sound knowledge of International Construction Law, International Arbitration, International Loan Negotiation, International Legal Drafting, International Legislation and trade Interpretation, Government of Jamaica Procurement Framework, Town and Country Planning Laws, and Conveyancing 
  • Experience working in the public sector would be an asset
