Medical Social Worker (HPC/MSW 1) - Percy Junor Hospital

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited tertiary institution 
• Successful completion of internship 
• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the public health system 

Required Skills & Specialized Techniques:

• Comprehensive knowledge of the scope and methods of social work 
• Sound knowledge of the environment and community resources 
• Working knowledge of the public health systems relating to the delivery of health care
• Well-developed interviewing skills 
• Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written format 
• Good analytical skills 
• Ability to relate to individuals and groups of varying educational backgrounds 

Key responsibilities will include:

• Assessing the social, emotional and economic factors relevant to medical diagnosis and treatment as well as communicating these to other members of the health team. 
• Consulting regularly with other members of the health team to find ways to help patients and families cope with any personal and environmental stress that might be impeding recovery. 
• Visiting the homes of patients and other relevant persons/places in order to make social assessments. 
• Making follow-up visits to discharged patients to continue therapeutic casework and family counselling and ensuring that necessary clinic visits are made. 
• Informing the relevant authorities of cases of abandonment, child abuse and neglect and ensuring the appropriate follow-up of such cases. 
• Establishing links with relevant state agencies concerned with the health and welfare of children and utilize utilizing their services in the interest of patients and their families. 
• Helping patients and their families to access and utilize available community resources.
• Establishing and/or maintaining a comprehensive record keeping system. 
• Advising the Senior Medical Officer on the social needs of patients and the expansion or establishment of services to meet these needs.
