Under the direct supervision of the Consultant, the incumbent has responsibility for providing support to the general nursing and medical staff and specifically to apply and remove casts, splints and braces for patients.

 

Qualification and Experience

  • Successful completion of on the job training in the Application and Removal of Casts, Splints and Braces. 
  • Secondary School Education 
  • Successful Completion of accredited training in Allied Health Nursing – Level 2 (NCTVET) 

 

Specific Knowledge and Required Skills

  • Knowledge and use of plaster of paris (POP) 
  • Knowledge of the Principles and Practices of an Orthopaedic Technician 
  • Excellent knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures for POP 
  • Knowledge of the use of POP Equipment 
  • Knowledge of Infection Control and safety measures 
  • Excellent Teamwork & Cooperation skills 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally 
  • Ability to control operations of systems or equipment. 
  • Good knowledge of Computer Applications. 
  • Excellent time management skills 
  • Excellent customer quality focus 

 

Key Responsibilities will include:

Technical/Professional

  • Applying and removes casts, splints and braces. 
  • Instructing patients in caring for their injuries understand and adjust traction equipment (skin and skeletal) and be able to adjust crutches, walkers and other aids and provide instructions to patients in their use. 
  • Attending surgical patients - remove plasters and traction, prepare limb (wash and sanitize). 
  • Managing equipment – preparation, usage, cleaning and storage. 
  • Assisting physicians in the manipulation of fractures. 
  • Assisting physicians with patient care; properly fits and applies pre-operative braces, crutches and other soft goods, assisting in preparation for and application of casts and orthopaedic appliances 
  • Assisting physicians and nurses with orthopaedic procedures including wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures, fracture reduction etc. 
  • Instructing patients in casts and traction care and use of the orthopaedic appliances
  • Maintaining clean and well stocked casts and soft goods room; order special supplies and or equipment. 
  • Coordinating data collection resources for the clinic information system.
  • Remaining current with orthopaedic trends, care and supplies. 

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH JOB

  • Constant exposure to the plaster of paris
