The lecturer delivers high-quality instruction and graduate supervision, advances environmental engineering through research and laboratory modernization, and actively contributes to departmental service and industry collaboration.

 

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate must possess at minimum, a PhD from a recognised university, in Civil Engineering or Civil and Environmental Engineering or equivalent engineering in a closely related field, with a B.Sc. (Honours) in Civil Engineering or Civil and Environmental Engineering 

 

Candidates should also possess:   

  • At least three (3) years’ teaching experience at a recognised tertiary institution/university, particularly in the field of Engineering
  • A substantial record of research and publications in reputable peer reviewed journals, particularly in the area of Civil and Environmental Engineering or equivalent/related field
  • Familiarity with commercial and open-source modelling tools, including GIS software, and the design of environmental systems
  • A strong background and expertise in the area of Environmental Engineering and Policy
  • Expertise in one (1) or more of the following areas: 
    •            o   Engineering Hydrology
    •            o   Water Resources
    •            o   Water and Wastewater Treatment
    •            o   Solid and Hazardous Waste Engineering and Management
    •            o   Air Pollution Soil and Groundwater Contamination
    •            o   Modelling and Simulation Software
    •            o   Environmental Chemistry
    •            o   Environmental Impact Assessments
    •            o   Sustainable Development
    •            o   Climate Change and Carbon Management
    •            o   Circular Economy 

 

Candidates with the following would have an advantage:

  • A MSc. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Membership from a recognised Professional Engineering Body
  • Experience in the supervision of student research projects at Masters or Doctoral level
  • Competency in successfully obtaining funding for research with evidence by contribution to funding proposals 

 

The following would be considered assets:

  • Certification in university teaching and learning
  • Industrial or consultancy experience in Civil and Environmental Engineering (including internships or short-term roles)
  • Proof of practical experience and professional engagement
  • Evidence of active interaction with industry and policy formulation

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in area of expertise
  • Supervising graduate students at the MSc, MPhil and PhD levels in the area of expertise
  • Preparing and delivering lectures, tutorials, workshops, and seminars
  • Setting and grading assignments, tests and examinations
  • Assisting in developing curricula and course material that can be used across a number of platforms
  • Modernising the Environmental Engineering Laboratory to consider new contaminants, and for expanding capability to include solid waste analyses
  • Collaborating with other academics to improve teaching methods and expand knowledge base
  • Providing support to students and colleagues
  • Conducting research, and writing papers, proposals, journal articles, and books
  • Conducting fieldwork, investigations, and writing-up reports
  • Establishing links with industry to pursue relevant research projects
  • Attending and participating in meetings, conferences, and other events inside and outside of the Institution
  • Participating in training opportunities and initiatives at the Institution
  • Staying current by reading widely and producing published work in the field
  • Serving on Committees at the Department, Faculty and University levels as required
  • Performing any other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Department or designate 

 

Personal Attributes
