Under the supervision of the Manager, Genomic Sequencing the incumbent is responsible for sample acquisition, handling and storage and other pre-exam.

 

KEY OUTPUTS:

  • Reception, sorting, labelling, and storage of all sample types and accompanying documents according to established Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) managed.
  • An up-to-date inventory of laboratory supplies kept.
  • Rigorous sanitation protocols within the laboratory environment upheld.
  • Systematic and daily input of equipment maintenance data completed.
  • Established daily records management protocols for all physical and digital documentation were adhered to.
  • Individual work plan developed.

Management/Administrative Responsibilities

  • Develops individual work plan

Technical Responsibilities

  • Prepares laboratories daily for upcoming activities, ensuring a clean, sterile, and organized workspace.
  • Maintains a clean, sterile, and organized workspace, including decontaminating benches and sterilizing glassware/equipment.
  • Oversees and schedules the cleaning of refrigerators and freezers.
  • Prepares reagents and stock solutions according to established protocols.
  • Labels and accessions samples into the laboratory information system (LIS) with high accuracy.
  • Monitors, tracks, and files specimens and samples through all phases (pre-analytical, storage, and disposal) according to established protocols.
  • Prepares specimens/samples for transportation to external or reference laboratories.
  • Discards samples and updates records as outlined in the Quality protocols.
  • Operates and maintains basic laboratory equipment (e.g., BSC, centrifuges, vortexes, autoclaves), including completing scheduled maintenance and daily performance checks.
  • Performs daily temperature checks on fridges, freezers, Dry Block heaters and incubators, and logs the data.
  • Monitors inventory of lab supplies, chemicals, and reagents, and assists in stocktaking activities.
  • Documents Quality checklists as outlined in Quality protocols.
  • Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) precisely for all tasks.
  • Performs any other duties assigned by the sequencing team.

 

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • All specimens received in department processed according to standard operating procedures within the established timeline
  • Reports prepared are accurate and submitted within the agreed guidelines and timeline
  • Protocols developed and updated within the agreed timeline
  • Monthly, Annual and Special Key Performance Indicators data, collected, collated and submitted and appropriate corrective and preventive action performed within the agreed timeline
  • Reagents, consumables and supplies inventory monitored, and report submitted according to guidelines and within specified timeframe
  • Equipment, reagent and consumables inventory created and maintained according to guidelines
  • Sample filing system designed and monitored according to established schedule
  • Quality program monitored and appropriate corrective and preventive action performed within established timeframe
  • Sample filing system designed and monitored and reviewed within agreed timeframe
  • Result database updated and maintained according to established guidelines and within given timeframe
  • Individual work plan developed and submitted within the agreed timeline

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • 4 CXC or O' Level including English and a Science subject
  • One (1) year experience working in a Laboratory
  • Training in Molecular Laboratory cleaning and Maintenance
  • Training in waste management
  • Training in Laboratory Information System
