JOB PURPOSE
Under the supervision of the Coordinator, In-Service, the Senior Nurse Educator/Tutor provides advanced academic, clinical, and instructional leadership in the delivery of nursing and allied health education programmes. The incumbent integrates evidence-based pedagogy, simulation technologies, digital learning tools, and contemporary nursing practices to strengthen clinical competence and improve training outcomes. The incumbent is also responsible for ensuring programme alignment with national health priorities and workforce development needs, while supporting continuous professional education for nurses within the public health system.

Key Responsibility Areas:
Management/Administrative Responsibilities
- Prepares and submits course schedules, teaching rosters, evaluation summaries, and training reports.
- Prepares and submits an Individual Work Plan aligned with the approved Operational Plan of the Training Centre, within established timelines, and monitors progress against agreed outputs.
- Participates in the development and periodic review of the ITEC Unit Plan, contributing to the identification of priorities, targets, and performance indicators aligned with institutional and Ministry objectives.
- Ensures adherence to Ministry policies, Nursing Council standards, and ethical principles.
- Prepares quarterly, annual, and special reports reflecting programme outcomes, student performance, training gaps, and resource needs.
- Attends local and international seminars, conferences, and training workshops to maintain clinical and instructional competence.
- Represents the unit in internal and external meetings, steering committees, and national working groups on education and training.
- Participates in committees including Curriculum, Assessment, Evaluation, and Disciplinary Committees.
Technical Responsibilities
- Utilizes competency-based frameworks to assess student performance and clinical readiness.
- Conducts site visits to clinical partners to monitor clinical training environments and ensure compliance with standards.
- Leads the development, review, and updating of nursing curricula to reflect evidence-based practice, emerging health threats, public health priorities, and new treatment guidelines.
- Incorporates simulation-based learning, digital literacy, interprofessional education, and patient-centred care into curriculum design.
- Ensures alignment with Nursing Council requirements, and Ministry of Health & Wellness mandates.
- Provides structured academic advisement, mentoring, psychosocial support, and coaching to enhance student success.
- Implements remediation strategies for students requiring additional support and enrichment activities for high performers.
- Promotes professionalism, ethical conduct, cultural competence, and lifelong learning.
- Coordinates programme logistics, supervision schedules, external lecturers, practicum arrangements, and competency assessments.
- Incorporates emerging trends in healthcare (telehealth, digital therapeutics, IPC innovations, evidence-based practice) into training modules.
- Leads or supports research activities, programme evaluations, and evidence-based quality improvement initiatives.
- Serves as a resource person to other nursing programmes and supports CPD initiatives across the health system.
- Develops, updates, and delivers competency-based course content, incorporating adult learning principles and evidence-based nursing practice.
- Designs and prepares lesson plans, teaching aids, simulation activities, and assessment tools.
- Facilitates classroom and clinical instruction for Fundamental and specialty courses.
- Conducts internal and external examinations, including item writing, grading, and exam analysis.
- Performs continuous assessment of student performance and provides feedback and remediation plans.
- Maintains accurate academic and clinical performance records for all learners.
- Monitors the implementation of training activities for all ongoing programmes /courses.
- Identifies required training materials, supplies, and equipment for instructional delivery
Minimum Required Education and Experience:
- Registered General Nurse
- Master of Science (MSc) Degree in Nursing Education or General Education, a related field from an accredited institution is the standard requirement.
AND
- Post Graduate Diploma in Education or other recognized teacher training certification from an accredited institution
- Minimum of Five (5) years Clinical Practice in specific areas in nursing (e.g. Maternal and Child Health, Paediatric, Adult Health, etc.)
- Valid License with the Nursing Council of Jamaica
