Assistant Vice President, Credit Risk Manager

Reporting to the VP, Head of Credit Risk Management, this role is responsible for monitoring and maintaining Butterfield’s credit risk standards and will have designated credit approval authority limits. The individual will review and oversee a portfolio of various lending products, including Retail, Private Banking and Corporate Banking and also oversee day to day management of a small team.

 

Your responsibilities will include

  • Review and evaluate credit proposals submitted by the Retail, Private Banking and Corporate Banking teams to ensure compliance with Butterfield’s credit policies and risk appetite.
  • Exercise approval authority within dedicated credit limits and make recommendations to senior management and the Credit Committee.
  • Review and approve execution of facility letters and collateral documentation.
  • Support the VP, Head of Credit Risk Management with managing and updating credit risk policies, underwriting guidelines and lending product offerings to ensure they remain in line with local market conditions and Butterfield’s strategic objectives.
  • Monitor and analyse the lending portfolios’ performance, identify emerging risks, industry sector trends and areas requiring attention or corrective actions. Provide recommendations and implement corrective actions with regards to underperforming loans where necessary.
  • Prepare regular and ad hoc reports highlighting portfolio performance, risk exposure and emerging issues.
  • Support the VP, Head of Credit Risk Management with the preparation/compilation, communication, dissemination and when needed presentation of reports to various stakeholders, including senior management, Cayman Credit Committee, Cayman Risk Committee and any other jurisdiction committees.
  • Contribute to the development and ongoing enhancement of credit processes to improve the efficiency of Butterfield’s decision-making capabilities. Work closely with front-line staff (Personal Lending, Private Banking and Corporate Banking) and the credit support team to implement these efficiencies throughout the underwriting process.
  • Undertake specific high-level functions and roles assigned by the VP, Head of Credit Risk Management or Chief Risk Officer as required.
  • Support the VP, Head of Credit Risk Management with any audit related requests.
  • Support with delinquency portfolio ensuring defined metrics set is adequately monitored and met.
  • Supervisory and training responsibility for junior credit officers.
  • Other Credit Risk Management duties and responsibilities as required.

The team manages the credit risk associated with the Bank’s business activities, maintaining a framework of credit policies and guidelines to ensure that credit decisions are sound and credit risk exposure is kept within proper and acceptable risk parameters.

 

Your qualifications and skills include

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, Finance, Economics or a related field;
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in the financial services, preferably in retail banking credit or lending.
  • Professional designation would be beneficial but is not mandatory (CPA, ACCA, FRM etc.)
  • Strong analytical skills including financial analysis, financial structuring and loan documentation.
  • Working knowledge of collateral security issues and proven management and leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present reports to various stakeholders.
  • Ability to think strategically and act operationally.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism and attention to detail.
