We are seeking an experienced Database Administrator to join our growing team and drive the expansion of the Bank’s presence with the corporate segment.

 

Position Overview:

The Database Administrator, within the Application Support Unit of the IT Department, is responsible for maintaining and managing the bank’s core databases, supporting user systems, patch management, and developing database-related programs. This role involves troubleshooting technical issues, collaborating with staff and IT vendors, and supporting new technology initiatives.

Success is measured by the efficient management of databases, problem-solving abilities, and the quality of support provided. The Database Administrator will contribute to achieving IT goals and ensuring operational efficiency across the bank.
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides support and maintenance for the databases that support all Bank applications and critical software.
  • Performs query, script, and report writing activities as required.
  •  Performs application installations, configurations, preventative maintenance, and system repairs by interfacing with vendors as necessary, following technical protocols, and identifying and resolving unexpected failures.
  •  Performs proactive and pre-emptive system checks to ensure all systems are performing optimally and within the prescribed target objectives of the department.
  • Troubleshoots databases, systems, and application problems, including issues with servers where required.
  • Functions as a project resource for any project relative to the field of expertise.
  • Documents all assigned incidents and problem resolutions, ensuring follow-through to completion of all activities and customer satisfaction.
  • Executes, coordinates, and assists in the implementation of new technologies and information systems as directed by the manager by providing input for rollout plans, technical risk assessments, and evaluating options.
  • Reviews and tests technologies for potential purchase by researching computer industry information, testing technologies within test and controlled environments, observing and documenting usability and network performance attributes, and reporting recommendations to the manager.
  • Assists the manager with the documentation and maintenance of technical standards and operations for all databases.
  • Provides written and verbal status reports regularly as directed.
  • Assists in the evaluation of Database Server hardware.
  • Performs the installation of Oracle and/or SQL database server software and any front-end tools and database applications that access the database.
  • Designs and coordinates each database structure, location, and requirements.
  • Ensures that all databases are performing optimally and monitored regularly.
  • Downloads and installs approved vendor patches and upgrades to the databases as required.
  • Creates approved Development and Test systems identical to the production system (maintaining the integrity of user access to these environments).
  • Ensures sound database best practices are implemented across all systems.
  • Ensures the creation and maintenance of documentation to support the environment and aid in recovery initiatives.
  • Provides support and maintenance for all Bank applications and critical software.
  • Develops minor software applications.
  • Performs other related duties as required by management.


Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a computer-related field; industry-standard database management certifications preferred.
  • Four (4) or more years of proven database systems experience.
  • A sound understanding and experience working with various application software and technology.
  • Knowledge of Oracle databases is a must (SQL, MySQL, and PostGres are a plus) to manage and support Central Database Systems.
  • Knowledge of AIX Linux and Linux variants, AS400, VMware technology, and various Windows operating systems to provide support and troubleshoot end-user and back-office systems.
  • Knowledge of network connectivity for databases, especially protocols in use by the Bank, to troubleshoot and rectify network problems.
  • Ability to harden databases and ensure best practice standards are followed.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to assess issues and technical information, examine alternatives, and use judgment to provide reasoned recommendations.
  • Knowledge of the Bank’s requirements for information reporting to prioritize data retrieval exercises.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to provide explanations, impart knowledge to end-users, support technology planning, and interact effectively with IT vendors.
