The incumbent delivers guided tours and interpretive experiences at The Retreat Garden, developing educational content, managing visitor operations, and monitoring engagement data to promote environmental stewardship and an "urban oasis" experience.

 

Position Overview

The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) seeks to engage an Interpretation Officer who will be responsible for the delivery of guided tours; interpretive experiences, and visitor engagement activities; development and support of interpretive content and educational materials; coordination of visitor services and tour operations; support of marketing and partnership initiatives; facilitation of environmental stewardship and safety practices; and monitoring of visitor engagement and programme participation at the Retreat Garden.

 

Key Responsibilities

Visitor Experience & Interpretation:

  • Deliver guided tours, interpretive talks, and interactive experiences that highlight the flora, habitats, and cultural history of The Retreat Garden.
  • Create memorable, place-based experiences that position the Garden as an “urban oasis” and a hub for locals and visitors.
  • Adapt tours and engagement techniques for families, tourists, and special interest groups.
  • Support self-guided experiences through interpretive storytelling and visitor engagement.

Interpretive Content & Experience Development:

  • Assist in the development and upkeep of interpretive signage, plant labels, brochures, and activity guides.
  • Contribute ideas to enhance interpretive themes, trails, and visitor engagement opportunities.
  • Support coordination with the Communications team to distribute brochures, digital assets, and promotional content.
  • Provide feedback from partners and visitors to inform marketing and product development.

Visitor Services & Operations:

  • Welcome and orient visitors, providing information on Garden features, safety guidelines, and programming.
  • Assist with bookings, tour coordination, and daily visitor flow management.
  • Collaborate with operations staff to maintain trails, interpretive areas, and visitor-ready spaces.

Safety & Stewardship:

  • Promote safe visitor behavior and adherence to park guidelines.
  • Provide basic first aid and respond to minor incidents when required.
  • Model environmental stewardship and responsible use of the Garden.

Monitoring, Reporting & Administration:

  • Track visitor numbers, tour participation, and programme engagement.
  • Collect visitor feedback to improve interpretive delivery and visitor experience.
  • Support reporting on visitor engagement KPIs.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • An Associate’s Degree in Natural Sciences with equivalent training and experience is preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • A natural public speaker with an ability to connect easily with audiences of all ages but especially with young people.
  • Knowledgeable and strong appreciation of the Bahamian natural environment.
  • Ability to swim and willingness to learn additional marine skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Must love the outdoors and can work in the sun, sand and sea.
  • Ability to lift 45lbs.
