Under the direct supervision of the Oxygen Plant Supervisor, the Oxygen Plant Operator is responsible for safe, efficient and reliable operation, monitoring and basic maintenance of the hospital’s oxygen generation and distribution systems.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor and oversee plant operation to ensure proper functioning 
  • Assist with start-up, shutdown, and operations of the PSA plant equipment/machinery
  • Ensure proper documentation of activities pertaining to the duties of plant operator Identify problems that arise during plant operation and resolve them Ensure that safety and environmental rules and programmes are strictly adhered to standards 
  • Perform operator-level preventative maintenance activities of the PSA plant
  • Observe flow meter, pressure and temperature gauges, bacteria filters, silencers (mufflers), dials, switches, boosters, compressors, and alarms, and other indicators to ensure that machines are working/equipment is properly working 
  • Maintain accurate files of all work performed. Files contain such information as lot and inventory numbers, cylinder maintenance and inspection logs, and materials required
  • Check and test all empty and filled cylinders, reassembling, repairing and diagnosing faults of oxygen cylinders regularly 
  • Maintain a clean, hazard-free work environment and free of health and safety hazards.
  • Fosters a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork within the plant environment
  • Ensures staff adhere to established safety and operational procedures at all times
  • Prepare and submit an individual work plan and reports 
  • Attend and participate in meetings, capacity-building sessions and workshops
  • Perform other related duties that may be assigned from time to time 

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB:

  • Will be required to work beyond normal working hours, on shift, weekends and public holidays, especially during emergencies or maintenance shutdowns 
  • Exposure to a range of environmental conditions, including noise, vibration, and varying temperatures 
  • Will be required to wear personal protective safety gear 
  • Work is primarily conducted within an industrial and administrative environment with exposure to mechanical and electrical equipment 
  • Fast-paced work environment requiring frequent interaction with critical stakeholders and adherence to tight deadlines 
  • May be required to travel across the Regional Health Authority to attend meetings, site visits, or training sessions 

 

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • HEART NSTA Level 2 Certificate in Electrical or AC & Refrigeration 
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical, electrical or manufacturing maintenance background is an asset 
  • Three (3) years’ experience in a similar capacity

  • Ability to conduct basic troubleshooting and maintenance such as preventive/ breakdown/ predictive/corrective/ effective maintenance of compressor, refrigerant air drier, filters and drains, bacteria filter, silencers (mufflers), flow meter, different types of valves, pressure and temperature gauges, booster compressor, etc.
