Program Summary:

Project HOPE is providing humanitarian assistance to the hurricane Melissa affected population in Jamaica. The current response portfolio focuses on Health, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, Protection, and WASH programming through Project HOPE programs and local partnerships.   

This role is offered as a consultancy position. This Consultant role will be based in Jamaica. Local Nationals only.  The role will be based in Westmoreland, St. James, Trelawny, Hanover, and St. Elizabeth. The selected consultant will work under a short-term contract to deliver specific outputs outlined as follows:

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The primary responsibility of the Pharmacist is to support the proper medical treatment of patients at one of Project HOPE’s health delivery points in Jamaica. The pharmacist will join a team providing primary and sexual reproductive health to the conflict-affected population in Jamaica.

The Pharmacist prepares medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders; verifying correct dosages and detecting therapeutic incompatibilities all according to Project HOPE principles and guidelines.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure pharmaceutical services are implemented according to internationally accepted standards.
  • Provide oversight for the requesting of drugs and medical commodities.
  • Establish standardized data collection tools on accurate data collection to track pharmaceutical consumption.
  • Work with the logistics and finance teams to ensure regular and adequate pharmaceutical and medical commodity levels are maintained to prevent stockouts.
  • Review documentation to confirm that appropriate pharmaceuticals were in fact provided to the beneficiaries.
  • Package and label prescriptions and counsel patients on their proper use and potential adverse events.
  • Coordinate with the Project HOPE Emergency Response Staff to ensure correct demobilization and proper disposition of pharmaceuticals.
  • Comply with all applicable legal rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Typically, Registered Pharmacist (R. Ph) or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D.) with valid licenses. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
  • Typically, 3-5+ years of relevant and progressive experience in multiple pharmacy practice settings i.e. community pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, research, regulatory affairs, academia etc., including 3+ years should be in resource poor environments or developing countries.
  • Previous NGO experience preferable.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a dynamic, high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent self-motivation skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and excellent decision-making skills.
  • Extremely flexible and have the ability to cope with stressful situations.
  • Able to work effectively with various personalities and cultures.
  • Able to work with limited resources.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Identifies with Project HOPE mission, vision and core values.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Consultants should be able to work in an office setting, communicate effectively, and travel as needed. Assignments may include field or emergency deployments in austere or hardship environments. Typical office noise is minimal, and travel may involve air or other modes of transportation.
