The incumbent supports maternal and child health by conducting antenatal/postnatal visits, providing care and screenings, promoting immunization and breastfeeding, and referring high-risk cases while maintaining records and equipment.

 

Job Purpose

Under the supervision of the Public Health Nurse/Supervisory Midwife, the incumbent will be responsible for the supervision and co-ordination of child care activities; providing nursing care in the Maternal, Child Health and Family Planning services in accordance with the objectives and policies of the programme as set out in the Maternal and Child Health Care Plan for Jamaica. 

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Certificate/Diploma in Midwifery from an accredited institution 
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Jamaica to practice as a Midwife
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in secondary care facility 
  • Certificate in Supervisory Management would be a definite asset 

 

Specific Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Knowledge of professional midwifery theory and practice 
  • Good interpersonal skills 
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations relating to Public Health 
  • Knowledge of government’s Public Health policies 
  • Good oral and written communication skills 
  • High level of confidentiality 
  • Sound judgment and initiative 

 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in identifying special needs in communities in relation to Maternal and Child Health. 
  • Preparing regular schedules for Antenatal/ Postnatal/ Child Welfare visits.
  • Providing AnteNatal care at clinics and arranges for follow-ups. 
  • Estimating hemoglobin level of clients, using appropriate reagents. 
  • Referring high risk patients to Type ??, ??? and ?V health centres as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that adequate screening of ante-natal patients is carried out
  • Providing advice to mothers and families about nutritional requirements including promotion of breastfeeding. 
  • Encouraging early immunization of babies. 
  • Conducting clinics/assisting the Public Health Nurse in immunization.
  • Responsibility for the maintenance of midwifery bags and their contents.
  • Responsibility for notification of live/stillbirths, neonatal and maternal deaths, puerperal infection and other infectious diseases.
