The Ministry of Justice & Constitutional Affairs (MJCA) is seeking to recruit suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Structural Engineer.

 

Job Purpose

Under the general direction of the Director, Technical Services, the Structural Engineer is responsible for evaluating, designing, and inspecting structural components of justice infrastructure projects to ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety regulations and Ministry requirements. 

 

Key Outputs:

  • Structural designs and assessments completed 
  • Engineering reports and recommendations prepared 
  • Compliance with building codes and safety standards ensured 
  • Site inspections conducted and documented 
  • Structural integrity of facilities maintained 

 

Key Responsibility Areas:

  • Conducts structural assessments of existing justice facilities and proposed construction sites
  • Prepares detailed structural designs, drawings and specifications for new construction and rehabilitation projects 
  • Reviews contractor submissions for structural adequacy and compliance with Ministry standards
  • Participates in joint site visits to monitor construction progress and ensure structural quality
  • Advises on appropriate materials and construction techniques based on site conditions and project scope 
  • Collaborates with architects, project officers and contractors to resolve structural issues
  • Prepares engineering reports outlining findings, recommendations and remedial actions
  • Ensures all structural work adheres to national building codes, safety regulations and environmental standards 
  • Supports procurement processes by contributing to technical specifications and evaluation criteria
  • Maintains records of structural evaluations, designs and site inspections 
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Qualifications and Experience 

  • BSc in Civil or Structural Engineering 
  • Five (5) years’ experience in structural design and construction oversight 
  • Registration with a recognized professional engineering body is an asset 
  • Experience in structural design, analysis and inspection 

Continuous Professional Development 

  • Attend training in emerging project management practices and technologies

  • Stay current with updates to procurement and construction regulations 

 

Authority:

  • Recommend structural design changes and remedial actions 
  • Approve structural components within scope of assigned projects 

 

Specific Conditions associated with the job

  • Required to travel island wide 
  • Possess a valid Driver’s Licence and a reliable motor vehicle 
  • May be required to work extended hours, including weekends and public holidays
  • Required to visit construction sites, including those with hazardous conditions
