The 1st Officer ensures safe navigation, maintains the deck log, monitors stability, supervises mooring, complies with environmental regulations, and follows all safety management procedures.

 

Responsibility and Authority

  • Safety of Navigation, as specified.
  • During the watch adhere to Emergency Procedures, as specified.
  • When vessel in port, comply with procedures, as specified.
  • When on watch enter in the deck logbook time and location of entry whenever a Work/Enclosed Spaces Permit is issued, as specified.
  • Prepare for the pilot card information sheet.
  • Consult with the Master and assess accurate weather forecasts and navigational warnings for the relevant area prior departure.
  • Inform the Master of navigational progress during the voyage cruise including speed and other relevant matters.
  • During the watch monitor the Watertight Doors status, as specified.
  • Together with the Staff Captain conduct daily ship’s stability calculation ensuring that at all times the vessel is complying with the requirements as described in the Ship’s Stability Book.
  • Follow up in the daily Ship's Stability Calculation during the assigned watch.
  • When on watch provide positive report regarding the Bridge readiness, as specified.
  • When on watch cooperate to ensure Safe Access to the Vessel, as specified.
  • To prepare a handover report prior leaving the vessel, as specified.
  • Comply with all requirements of the SMS – checklists, etc.
  • Familiar with the other watch keeping officers' duties.
  • As a watch standing officer, be knowledgeable of all relevant environmental regulations within the itinerary that the vessel is sailing in.
  • Attend mooring stations as instructed by the Staff Captain.
  • Carry out tank inspection as delegated by Staff Captain as specified.
  • Ensure that all aspects of company's OH&S are effectively applied during his/her working activities.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Specific Requirements for the assigned duties

BRIDGE WATCH 04-08; 16-20 / NAVIGATION

  • Ensure that the navigational charts required for the itinerary and for planning are available on board.
  • Correct and update the nautical publications and charts up to the latest appropriate Notice to Mariners/correction available.
  • Ensure that canceled charts are clearly marked as such and removed from the bridge.
  • Verifying the ship’s stability this to include training to all deck officers.
  • Training and auditing of new bridge officers’ familiarization to the bridge equipment.
  • Daily calculations of sunrise and sunset times and delivery of this information to the Cruise Director and the Information Desk and notify all Department Heads on time zone changes.
  • Assist in Familiarization with the Vessel process for the new joining & lower-ranked Officers as specified.
  • Assist the Staff Captain and the Safety Officer concerning emergency drills for guest and crew as needed.
  • Cooperate with the Safety Officer in applying instruction and training programs to Crewmembers, including but not limited to all Safety Drills as needed.

BRIDGE WATCH  08-12; 20-24 / Life Saving Appliances (LSA)

  • Maintain the vessel’s flag inventory.
  • Maintain pyrotechnics, signaling equipment and appliances.
  • Assist the Staff Captain and the Safety Officer concerning emergency drills for guest and crew as needed.
  • Support the Safety Officer on inspections of all Lifesaving Equipment, to ensure they are in good working condition, always ready for instant use and in accordance of SOLAS requirements.
  • Cooperate with the Safety Officer in applying instruction and training programs to Crewmembers, including but not limited to all Safety Drills as needed.

BRIDGE WATCH  00-04; 12-16 / Fire Fighting Equipments (FFE)

  • Monitoring correct functioning of the electronic instruments and navigational equipment, in cooperation with the Shipboard Technical Department.
  • Assist the Staff Captain and the Safety Officer concerning emergency drills for guest and crew as needed.
  • Support the Safety Officer on inspections of all Fire Fighting  Equipments , to ensure they are in good working condition, always ready for instant use and in accordance of SOLAS requirements.
  • In conjunction with the Safety Officer, supply training to Fire Fighting Squads;
  • Cooperate with the Safety Officer in applying instruction and training programs to Crewmembers, including but not limited to all Safety Drills as needed.
  • All watch standing officers shall rotate through the assigned duties at the discretion of the Master in order to gain experience in all responsible areas.

 

Education and Experience

  • Deck Officer qualifications and licenses in compliance with all International and National conventions and regulations.
  • Deck Officer License, endorsed by the Flag State, and all of the certificates as required by the STCW 95.
  • Chief Officer License, endorsed by the Flag State and all of the certificates as required by the STCW 95 is preferred but not required for the Officer assigned to the bridge watch 04-08; 16-20 / Navigation.
  • Some experience on passengers’ vessels as Deck Officer or equivalent position preferred.
  • Minimum 6 months experiences on passenger’s vessels as Deck Officer or equivalent position preferred for assigned to the bridge watch 04-08; 16-20 / Navigation.
