The Clinical Porter ensures safe, efficient, and comfortable patient transport within KEMH, delivering high-quality frontline support in line with service level standards.

 

Overview

The Clinical Porter is a member of BHB’s clinical portering service.  The role has responsibility for delivering safe, high quality transport/transfer of patients between different departments and wards safely and in comfort.  The Clinical Porter is also responsible for resourcing the transportation of patients within KEMH in accordance with service level specification. Clinical Portering Service will operate daily during which porters will respond courteously, efficiently and maintain a flexible, dedicated, comprehensive frontline support service.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assists patients in and out of vehicles, ambulances (as required), stretchers, lifts patients on and off beds moving them to and from special service/treatment areas, units using wheelchairs or moveable beds.
  • Receives and responds to requests and instructions to porter /escort of patients or equipment to a specified area.
  • Escorts ambulatory patients to KEMH services as required
  • Transfers deceased patients, following protocols, from clinical areas to the morgue
  • Collects and deliver laboratory specimens, supplies and equipment, as required, to specified areas
  • Collects and delivers medical records, keeping contents confidential at all times

 

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • High School Graduate, diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year experience in hospital environment an asset.  Previous portering experience an asset
  • Basic written and numeracy skills. Good verbal communication, interpersonal and listening skills
  • Additional skills to be obtained: Basic Life Support certification, Manual Handling, Non-Crisis Intervention Training (NCI)
  • A general understanding of the delivery of health care services at KEMH
  • Understanding of basic infection control
  • Ability to work on a rotation basis including weekend and holidays
